Experience with a new woven prosthesis.
The search for the ideal vascular graft is a dream that has eluded surgeons for centuries. Since the introduction of the fabric vascular prosthesis in 1952 by Voorhees, Jaretzki, and Blakemore, a wide variety of materials and designs have been tested. Dacron has withstood the test of time in both the knitted and woven types. Each of these graft designs has its own advantages and disadvantages, but we believe that the interlock construction of the Ochsner series grafts provides a solution to the problems associated with the earlier woven grafts while maintaining the advantages of the woven construction: (1) unraveling has been eliminated, and fraying has been reduced by the use of the interlock stitch; (2) the graft has been made soft and pliable by using three low-twist yarns, avoiding chemical impaction of the yarns, and utilizing a loose crimp; and (3) nonfixation of the pseudo-intima has been corrected by using low-twist, highly filamentous yarns which allow ingrowth of tissue for good fixation.

Delayed life-threatening pneumonitis secondary to procarbazine.
A patient with advanced Hodgkin's disease being treated with MOPP chemotherapy presented with delayed life-threatening pulmonary toxicity secondary to procarbazine. The pulmonary toxicity began 1 week after procarbazine had been discontinued and once recognized was successfully treated with intravenous steroids.

Heparin, the miracle drug: a brief history of its discovery.
Heparin is a drug used widely in almost every field of medicine; nevertheless, very little is known about its discovery. Jay McLean, a second year medical student at Johns Hopkins University, discovered this wonderful drug in 1916 while performing research in the laboratory of W.H. Howell, MD. This is a brief account of the story told by Dr McLean before his death.

Double mitral valve. Report of a case and review of the literature.
A case of double mitral valve orifice associated with atrioventricular canal was found at operation. These two anomalies are frequently associated. Double mitral valve is usually subclinical and does not necessarily need to be corrected, depending on the associated anomalies, the extent of the defect, and the personal experience of the surgeon. The embryology of double mitral valve is complicated and still needs to be clarified.

A modified sternal retractor.
A modification of the Favaloro sternal retractor is described that allows a singel person to operate the apparatus when elevating the sternal plate. The new retractor is also easier on the sternum because of its blunter teeth.

Carcinoid tumour of the thymus gland: report of a case.
CARCINOID OF THE THYMUS IS A RARE PROBLEM A case is reported to add to only 16 previously reported. None of these 17 patients had the carcinoid syndrome. Complete surgical excision, if possible, is the treatment of choice.

Lymphoma with large intracavitary metastasis to the heart. Report of a case.
A case if reported of a 2 1/2-year-old boy with an extensive filtration of the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, and almost every organ of the body with a very primitive type of tumor identified as a poorly-differentiated mixed histiocyticlymphocytic lymphoma. The right atrium was completely filled with a large intracavitary metastasis which caused obstruction of the venous return to the heart with subsequent death.
