Measurement of excited states in (40)Si and evidence for weakening of the N=28 shell gap.

Excited states in (40)Si have been established by detecting gamma rays coincident with inelastic scattering and nucleon removal reactions on a liquid hydrogen target. The low excitation energy, 986(5) keV, of the 2(1)(+) state provides evidence of a weakening in the N=28 shell closure in a neutron-rich nucleus devoid of deformation-driving proton collectivity.

Observation of strong low-lying E1 strength in the two-neutron halo nucleus 11Li.

An exclusive measurement has been made of the Coulomb dissociation of the two-neutron halo nucleus 11Li at 70 MeV/nucleon at RIKEN. Strong low-energy (soft) E1 excitation is observed, peaked at about Ex = 0.6 MeV with B(E1) = 1.42(18) e2fm2 for Erel < or = 3 MeV, which was largely missed in previous measurements. This excitation represents the strongest E1 transition ever observed at such low excitation energies. The spectrum is reproduced well by a three-body model with a strong two-neutron correlation, which is further supported by the E1 non-energy-weighted cluster sum rule.

Vanishing N = 20 shell gap: study of excited states in (27,28)Ne.

This Letter reports on the (1)H((28)Ne, (28)Ne) and (1)H((28)Ne, (27)Ne) reactions studied at intermediate energy using a liquid hydrogen target. From the cross section populating the first 2(+) excited state of (28)Ne, and using the previously determined BE(2) value, the neutron quadrupole transition matrix element has been calculated to be M(n)=13.8 +/- 3.7 fm(2). In the neutron knockout reaction, two low-lying excited states were populated in (27)Ne. Only one of them can be interpreted by the sd shell model while the additional state may intrude from the fp shell. These experimental observations are consistent with the presence of fp shell configurations at low excitation energy in (27,28)Ne nuclei caused by a vanishing N=20 shell gap at Z=10.

Anomalously hindered E2 strength B(E2;2+(1)-->0+) in 16C.

The electric quadrupole transition from the first 2(+) state to the ground 0(+) state in 16C is studied through measurement of the lifetime by a recoil shadow method applied to inelastically scattered radioactive 16C nuclei. The measured mean lifetime is 77+/-14(stat)+/-19(syst) ps. The central value of mean lifetime corresponds to a B(E2;2+(1)-->0(+)) value of 0.63e(2) fm(4), or 0.26 Weisskopf units. The transition strength is found to be anomalously small compared to the empirically predicted value.

A novel mutation in Ca2+-sensing receptor gene in familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia.

Missense mutations in the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) gene have previously been identified in patients with familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (FHH) and neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism. We identified a newborn with hypercalcemia in our hospital by mass screening. The family members were studied, and we found a novel CaSR missense mutation with polymerase chain reaction single-strand conformational polymorphism analysis. The mother, grandmother, and aunt of the baby all had FHH. A heterozygous missense mutation in exon 6 that substitutes a glutamic acid for the glycine at codon 557 (Gly557Glu), which corresponds to the extracellular domain of CaSR, was identified and shown to cosegregate with the disease. Identification of the mutation responsible for the FHH phenotype in this family may facilitate rapid testing of individuals at risk for FHH.

Epigallocatechin gallate and gallocatechin gallate in green tea catechins inhibit extracellular release of Vero toxin from enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7.

We studied the effects of six catechin derivatives (catechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) and gallocatechin gallate (GCg)) in green tea on the production and extracellular release of Vero toxins (VTs) from enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) cultured at 37 degrees C for 24 h. EGCg and GCg in the culture medium markedly inhibited extracellular VTs release from EHEC cells into the culture supernatant fluid at concentrations of 0.05 mg/ml or higher, as estimated by both the reversed passive latex agglutination assay and cytotoxic assay using Vero cells. Production and extracellular release of maltose binding protein, a periplasmic protein, into the culture supernatant were also inhibited by EGCg and GCg, indicating that their inhibitory effect on release from periplasm into the outer milieu is not specific to VTs, but general to the proteins accumulated in EHEC periplasm.

Tea catechin supplementation increases antioxidant capacity and prevents phospholipid hydroperoxidation in plasma of humans.

The effect of green tea catechin supplementation on antioxidant capacity of human plasma was investigated. Eighteen healthy male volunteers who orally ingested green tea extract (254 mg of total catechins/subject) showed 267 pmol of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCg) per milliliter of plasma at 60 min after administration. The plasma phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxide (PCOOH) levels attenuated from 73.7 pmol/mL in the control to 44.6 pmol/mL in catechin-treated subjects, being correlated inversely with the increase in plasma EGCg level. The results suggested that drinking green tea contributes to prevent cardiovascular disease by increasing plasma antioxidant capacity in humans.

Clinical profile and outcome of primary hyperparathyroidism accompanied by chronic renal failure.

We encountered 5 cases of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) accompanied by chronic renal failure over the past 4 years. Neither hypocalcemia nor hyperphosphatemia was found in the past records. The parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in these cases were extraordinarily higher than those in usual patients suffering from renal failure. The manifestation of PHPT-developed insidiously together with the decline of renal function. Serum 1,25(OH)2D3 levels were lower than normal range in all cases, and which in turn might accelerate the progression of PHPT in a similar way as the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroidectomy (PTX) was done successfully in 4 cases, and the pathology of the biggest gland was adenoma but hyperplasia was found in other glands simultaneously. These results revealed the polymorphism of parathyroid glands in case of complication with renal failure. Furthermore, the interruption of postoperative 1 alpha(OH)D3 treatment induced the relapse of hyperparathyroidism (HPT). The case which refused PTX was treated by oral pulse therapy with 1,25(OH)2D3. The calcium/intact PTH sigmoidal curve examined 3 years later revealed that the set point shifted to right and upward despite therapy. It suggested that functional parathyroid mass became larger and the sensitivity to calcium became less under continuous stimuli on parathyroid glands. According to these results, PHPT accompanying with renal failure is resistant to medical therapy, and surgical treatment is a possibility. In this occasion, total PTX with autograft transplantation is better than simple adenectomy because even the glands not responsible to clinical manifestation of PHPT can have some pathological abnormalities.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Acute renal failure and degenerative tubular lesions associated with in situ formation of adenovirus immune complexes in a patient with allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

We describe the development of acute renal failure and degenerative tubular lesions associated with local immune deposits in a patient with allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. A 21-year-old man with an acute myelocytic leukemia received a bone marrow graft from a cousin mismatched for a single HLA-DR locus antigen. Hemorrhagic cystitis due to adenovirus type 11 infection occurred 26 days after transplantation, and 17 days later the patients developed acute renal failure. A study of renal tissue obtained by needle biopsy showed degenerative and necrotic lesions, especially in the distal part of the nephron. By electron microscopy adenovirus type 11 particles were found in the nuclei of tubular cells and in cellular debris in tubular lumina. By immunofluorescence technique, granular immune deposits containing adenovirus type 11 related antigen(s), immunoglobulins, C3, and membrane attack complex (MAC) C5b-9 of the complement system were detected along the tubular basement membranes but not in glomeruli. The patient's IgG did not bind to normal human kidneys. These findings suggest that adenovirus type 11 directly induced acute tubular damage, and that the tubular immune deposits were formed "in situ" by viral antigens and circulating viral antibody.
