Spin state transition in LaCoO3 studied using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism.

Using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism at the Co-L(2,3) edge, we reveal that the spin state transition in LaCoO3 can be well described by a low-spin ground state and a triply degenerate high-spin first excited state. From the temperature dependence of the spectral line shapes, we find that LaCoO3 at finite temperatures is an inhomogeneous mixed-spin state system. It is crucial that the magnetic circular dichroism signal in the paramagnetic state carries a large orbital momentum. This directly shows that the currently accepted low- or intermediate-spin picture is at variance. Parameters derived from these spectroscopies fully explain existing magnetic susceptibility, electron spin resonance, and inelastic neutron data.

Transfer of spectral weight and symmetry across the metal-insulator transition in VO(2).

We present a detailed study of the valence and conduction bands of VO2 across the metal-insulator transition using bulk-sensitive photoelectron and O K x-ray absorption spectroscopies. We observe a giant transfer of spectral weight with distinct features that require an explanation which goes beyond the Peierls transition model as well as the standard single-band Hubbard model. Analysis of the symmetry and energies of the bands reveals the decisive role of the V 3d orbital degrees of freedom. Comparison to recent realistic many body calculations shows that much of the k dependence of the self-energy correction can be cast within a dimer model.

Femtosecond dynamics in ferromagnetic metals investigated with soft x-ray resonant emission.

We present measurements of the magnetic circular dichroism in x-ray resonant emission in the perpendicular geometry (circularly polarized x rays at normal incidence to the magnetization) for L(2,3) the absorption region in Fe, Co, and Ni metal. The results show that spin-dependent screening of the core hole takes place within the scattering time scale, which is supported by the absence of the effect in ionic systems. This allows an assessment of the time scale for the screening process (up to a few femtoseconds). The process is almost complete within the scattering time for Fe and Co, but this is not the case for the narrow band metal Ni which shows a much slower dynamics.

Experimental observation and theoretical description of the pure Fano effect in the valence-band photoemission of ferromagnets.

The pure Fano effect in angle-integrated valence-band photoemission of ferromagnets has been observed for the first time. A contribution of the intrinsic spin polarization to the spin polarization of the photoelectrons has been avoided by an appropriate choice of the experimental parameters. The theoretical description of the resulting spectra reveals a complete analogy to the Fano effect observed before for paramagnetic transition metals. While the theoretical photocurrent and spin-difference spectra are found in good quantitative agreement with experiment in the case of Fe and Co, only a qualitative agreement could be achieved in the case of Ni by calculations on the basis of plain local spin-density approximation. Agreement with experimental data could be improved in this case in a very substantial way by a treatment of correlation effects on the basis of dynamical mean field theory.

Determination of the orbital moment and crystal-field splitting in LaTiO3.

Utilizing a sum rule in a spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopic experiment with circularly polarized light, we show that the orbital moment in LaTiO3 is strongly reduced from its ionic value, both below and above the Ne el temperature. Using Ti L2,3 x-ray absorption spectroscopy as a local probe, we found that the crystal-field splitting in the t2g subshell is about 0.12-0.30 eV. This large splitting does not facilitate the formation of an orbital liquid.

Angle resolved photoemission from Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 using high energy photons: a fermi surface investigation.

We have performed an angle resolved photoemission study on a single crystal of the optimally electron doped (n-type) cuprate superconductor Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15) at a photon energy of 400 eV. The Fermi surface is mapped out and is, in agreement with earlier measurements, of hole-type with the expected Luttinger volume. However, comparing with previous low energy measurements, we observe a different Fermi surface shape and a different distribution of spectral intensity around the Fermi surface contour. The observed Fermi surface shape indicates a stronger electron correlation in the bulk as compared to the surface.

Low energy electronic excitations in the layered cuprates studied by copper L3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering.

We have measured the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the Cu L3 edge in a variety of cuprates. Exploiting a considerably improved energy resolution (0.8 eV) we recorded significant dependencies on the sample composition and orientation, on the scattering geometry, and on the incident photon polarization. The RIXS final states correspond to two families of electronic excitations, having local (dd excitations) and nonlocal (charge-transfer) character. The dd energy splitting can be estimated with a simple crystal field model. The RIXS at the L3 edge demonstrates here a great potential, thanks to the resonance strength and to the large 2p spin-orbit splitting.

Unraveling orbital ordering in La0.5Sr1.5MnO4.

Orbital ordering (OO) in the layered perovskite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 has been investigated using the enhanced sensitivity of soft x-ray resonant diffraction at the Mn L edges. The energy dependence of an OO diffraction peak over the L(2,3) edges is compared to ligand-field calculations allowing a distinction between the influences of Jahn-Teller distortions and spin correlations. The energy dependence of the diffraction peak at the Mn L1 edge is remarkably different from that observed at the Mn K edge.

Perpendicular interlayer coupling in Ni80Fe20/NiO/Co trilayers.

An in-plane perpendicular magnetic coupling between Ni80Fe20 and Co has been found in NiFe/NiO/Co trilayers for a NiO thickness ranging from 4 to 25 nm by magneto-optical Kerr effect and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements. In the easy magnetization direction of the Co layer, the Co coercive field H(C) increases when the thickness of the NiO layer t(NiO) increases. Because of the coupling, H(C) is always larger than for NiO/Co bilayers with the same thicknesses. The saturation field of the NiFe layer H(S) decreases when t(NiO) increases, indicating a weakening of the coupling. Numerical simulations show that the presence of interface roughness combined with a small value of the NiO anisotropy can explain the observed 90 degrees coupling.

Crossing the gap from p- to n-type doping: nature of the states near the chemical potential in La(2)-(x)Sr(x)CuO(4) and Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta).

We report on an x-ray absorption and resonant photoemission study on single crystals of the high-T(c) cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta). Using an intrinsic energy reference, we find that the chemical potential of La2-xSrxCuO4 lies near the top of the La2CuO4 valence band whereas in Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta) it is situated near the bottom of the Nd2CuO4 conduction band. The data clearly establish that the introduction of Ce in Nd2CuO4 results in electrons being doped into the CuO2 planes. We infer that the states closest to the chemical potential have a Cu 3d(10) singlet origin in Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta) and a 3d(9)L singlet origin in La2-xSrxCuO4.

Sum rules in x-ray resonant Raman scattering: recovering the Co ground state information in CoFe2O4 as a test case.

We present an approach to x-ray resonant Raman scattering suitable for sum-rule analysis. In magnetic systems it gives ground state information as represented by an expansion in coupled multipoles of orbital and spin moments. The experiment is based on the angular dependence of the integrated peak intensities. In 3d transition elements one obtains information up to order 4 from the channel 2p(6)3d(n)-->2p(5)3d(n+1)-->2p(6)3s(1)3d(n+1). By combining these results with L(2,3) absorption dichroism, we show quantitatively the atomiclike properties of cobalt in CoFe2O4 up to high-order multipoles.

Magnetism of the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface.

The magnetism of epitaxial ultrathin films of Fe on ZnSe(001) has been investigated by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism down to the submonolayer regime. In contrast to other metallic ferromagnet/semiconductor interfaces, no reduction of the Fe magnetic moment was found at the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface. Furthermore, a significant enhancement of the Fe magnetic moment compared to the bulk value was observed for coverages up to one monolayer in agreement with theoretical predictions. We also demonstrate that the magnetic properties of the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface remain stable against thermal annealing up to 300 degrees C, a prerequisite for the future development of efficient spintronics devices.

Exchange splitting and charge carrier spin polarization in EuO.

High quality thin films of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO have been prepared and were studied using a new form of spin-resolved spectroscopy. We observed large changes in the electronic structure across the Curie and metal-insulator transition temperature. We found that these are caused by the exchange splitting of the conduction band in the ferromagnetic state, which is as large as 0.6 eV. We also present strong evidence that the bottom of the conduction band consists mainly of majority spins. This implies that doped charge carriers in EuO are practically fully spin polarized.

Detection of Zhang-Rice singlets using spin-polarized photoemission.

From a spin-resolved photoemission study on the Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) superconductor, we show experimentally that the first ionization state is of nearly pure singlet character. This is true both above and below the superconducting transition and in the presence of doping and band formation. This provides direct support for the existence and stability of Zhang-Rice singlets in high-temperature superconductors, justifying the ansatz of single-band models. Moreover, we establish this technique as an important probe for a wide range of cuprates and strongly correlated materials.

Spin-orbit coupling in the Mott insulator Ca(2)RuO(4).

O 1s x-ray absorption study of the Mott insulator Ca(2)RuO(4) shows that the orbital population of the 4d t(2g) band dramatically changes with temperature. In addition, spin-resolved circularly polarized photoemission study of Ca(2)RuO(4) shows that a substantial orbital angular momentum is induced in the Ru 4d t(2g) band. Based on the experimental results and model Hartree-Fock calculations, we argue that the cooperation between the strong spin-orbit coupling in the Ru 4d t(2g) band and the small distortion of the RuO(6) octahedra causes the interesting changeover of the spin and orbital anisotropy as a function of temperature.

Element-selective nanosecond magnetization dynamics in magnetic heterostructures.

We have developed a new original technique to study the magnetization reversal dynamics of thin films with element selectivity in the nanosecond time scale. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements in pump-probe mode are carried out taking advantage of the time structure of synchrotron radiation. The dynamics of the magnetization reversal of each of the layers of complex heterostructures (like spin valves or tunnel junctions) can be probed independently. The interlayer coupling in the studied systems has been shown to play a key role in the determination of the magnetization reversal of each individual layer.
