[Changes in the vitamin D content in cow's milk irradiated in vitro with ultraviolet rays and in the blood serum of calves fed the irradiated milk].

Comparative investigations aiming to determine the most favourable dose for in vitro ultraviolet irradiation of cow milk which can ensure highest vitamin D content in it and best effect on vitamin D level in calf blood serum were carried out. It was established that under the applied technique of ultraviolet irradiation a 4 min treatment is most suitable and vitamin D content in milk rises several times (up to 8 times). Feeding of calves up to the age of 60 days with irradiated milk ensures a 4- to 5-fold increase of vitamin D in the blood serum as compared to its initial level before the experiment started and 2--3 fold as compared to that in control group calves.

[Radiotelemetric studies on uterine motility in cows during the 3d period of labor and the early puerperal period].

The outside appearance of a one-channel radiotelemetric system is presented and a short description of supplementary devices for the study of uterine motility in cows is given. The radiotube consisting of an inductive converter and a two-transistor sound generator is described in short. The tube is placed directly in the uterine cavity through the cervical canal. The numerical values of contractile uterine activity in hours post delivery up to the 120 hour are presented in one table and a graph. Original registering of normal uterine activity and of reflectory inhibition of the same are shown as well as registerings of other functions of the organism through the uterus such as urination, defecation, lowing and belching. The contractile activity of the uterus during a normal course of the third stage of labour and the early puerperium is most strongly expressed during the first day post calving. The duration of this activity in the following days is directly dependent on the individual characteristics of the organism.

[Effect of supplementary artificial illumination with visible rays on biochemical indices in the blood serum, milk yields and fertilization during lactation].

Comparative investigations were made with two groups of cows (a control) and an experimental one) aiming to establish the effect of prolonged day length during the autumn-winter and the early spring periods on the physiological state of the cows, the yield of milk and fertilization during the lactation period. Results obtained indicate that supplementary illumination with visible rays at a rate of 5 w/m2 from the floor and a 16 h day length including the natural day period, enhances the content of Ca, inorganic P and vitamin D and A of the blood serum, stabilizes at a constant level the quantity of total protein and rises the content of albumins and gamma-globulins. As a result of these and probably of some other changes in the organism, the physiological state of the cows is either maintained normal or is improved, a fact leading to 13% higher milk yield on the average for the lactation period, service period shortened to 87 days and increased number of pregnant cows following the first insemination.

[Pressure transducer for radiotelemetric studies].

Designed has been a combined transformer for pressure on the principle of the photoelectric effect. It records directly the pressure produced within the system and outside through the arrow mechanism of the manometer for blood pressure, and transforms the mechanical fluctuations of the membrane into electric ones. Used has been a blood presser manometer additionally supplied with a photoelement, a tiny electric bulb, and a metal lamelle. The photoelement is connected into the electric scheme of a PC-generator of a 1600-2000 Hz frequency, and the latter produces frequency that supplies the carrying frequency of the radiotransmitter. Shown are original records made at various points of the dorsal sac of the rumen of a ewe as well as of the carotic artery of a cow.

[Radiotelemetric method of studying ruminal movements in cows].

A description is given of a monochannel radiotelemetric system primarily designed to study the motility of the rumen but also adapted for use in studying the bioelectric activity of the heart, uterus, and other viscera. The system consists of an emitting part and a receiving-registering part. The former is composed of an emitting part and a receiving-registering part. The former is composed of a transformer (drawbar-sensing mechanism), an amplifier of biopotentials, a generator, and an ultra-short-wave transmitter. The registering mechanism consists of a receiver, a decoder, and a writing device. The apparatus provides a stable transmission of physiologic information at a distance of up to 500 meters. Presented are graphic recordings of the motility of the dorsal sac of the rumen of clinically normal cows supplied with chronic fistulae of the rumen as well as of cows having no fistulae, in a varying physiologic status.

[Effect of ultraviolet ray-irradiated autogenous blood on hematological indices in horses].

Comparative clinical and experimental investigations were carried out on 18 clinically normal horses. It was found that the single transfusion of in vitro UV-treated autogenous blood, following a previously described method, was tolerated well by horses and did not lead to any deviations from the normal indices. Under the effect of the treated blood there was an increase in the hemoglobin content, rise in the erythrocyte and leukocyte count with slightly expressed hyperleukocytosis and weak neutrophilia (simple regeneration of the blood). The sedimentation of erythrocytes also showed higher rates as early as the first hour following the autohemotransfusion, remaining at the attained level up to the fourth day, while on the sixth day it again came back to the initial value. The contents of calcium and inorganic phosphorus rose, showing a slightly expressed shift to the physiologic level without reaching it. The changes in the phagocytic activity of the blood showed that the autohemotransfusion stimulates phagocytosis. Along with these effects the bacteriostatic titer of the blood, as recorded with the use of the anthrax bacillus as early as the first hour, and likewise favourably affected, the highest titers being observed at the 24th and 48th hour.

[Epiphysiolysis in cattle].

Rentgenologically and clinically established cases of epiphysiolysis and apophysiolysis are described. They are observed primarily in cattle aged from 7--8 months to three years. Highest percentage of epiphysiolysis cases has been established with the distal epiphysis of the metatarsal bones (82.6%), and a negligible one has been observed (3 cases) in the distal epiphysis of the metacarpal bones. A single case has been established in the distal part of the tibia. The case of apophysiolysis concern the apophysis of the heel processus, tuber calcanei. Contributing factors are said to be the mechanical and traumatic influences, and predisposing ones are the distrubances in the bone-formation processes.

[Administration of streptomycin to the uterus by electrophoresis].

Comparative experimental studies on female dogs and rabbits revealed the extent to which the penetration and deposition of streptomycin in the tissues of the uterus, oviducts, mesometrium, ovaries, the blood serum and other organs take place. The antibiotic is applied i/m, via the uterus through electrohoresis following a method developed by the authors and through simple introduction into the uterus. Results have shown that the electrophoretic introduction of streptomycin is advantageous in terms of a readily achieved depot in the tissues mentioned above which remains active at values above the therapeutic concentrations 24 to 48 hours following the application of the antibiotic.
