A study comparing the effects of diatrizoate, ioxitalamate, metrizamide, ioxaglate, iopamidol and a hyperosmotic sorbitol and sodium chloride solution on the endothelium of the vena cava of the rat was performed. In each case 1 ml. of the respective solution was injected intravenously. Endothelial damage was seen after injection of metrizamide, diatrizoate and ioxitalamate. After injection of ioxaglate only minor endothelial changes were observed, whereas after administration of both hyperosmotic solution no endothelial damage could be observed.
The effect of diatrizoate, ioxitalamate, metrizamide, and ioxaglate on the aortic endothelium of the rat was investigated using transmission electron microscopy and DNA synthesis autoradiography. One milliliter of each contrast medium, containing 300 mg iodine per ml, was injected into the aorta. The types of lesions seen on electron microscopy and the rate of DNA synthesis seen on autoradiography established the degree of endothelial damage that had been produced. Of the four contrast agents tested, ioxaglate produced the least amount of cellular change.

Investigations have been carried out on the endothelial damage produced by diatrizoate (Angiografin) during the course of endotoxin shock. A single injection was given directly into the aorta of 1 ml of the contrast medium, with an iodine content of 300 mg/ml. The increased proliferation of the aortic endothelium could be shown to be due to the endotoxin shock, but was not further increased by administration of the contrast medium.

The time course of distribution of 2 endotoxic lipopolysaccharides (LPS), S. abortus equi (S form) and S. minnesota R 595 (R form, Re), in liver, lungs and kidneys was studied by the immunoperoxidase method in rats. After its uptake in the liver, both LPS were first detectable in Kupffer cells and granulocytes, the R form also in hepatocytes. A redistribution of the S-form LPS from Kupffer cells to hepatocytes was observed on Day 3 after injection. The detectability of both LPS was lost between Days 5 and 9 after injection. In the lungs both LPS were detectable later than in the liver. Here the LPS were also found in alveolar and bronchiolar macrophages, which shows that they can also be eliminated through this organ. The kidneys remained essentially free of LPS, small amounts being detectable here only in the first 24 h.
Health education aimed mainly at changing individual behaviour and lifestyle faces growing challenges. Recent research suggests that broader economic, social and environmental forces are the determinants of many diseases and of behaviours that contribute to ill health. Furthermore, health education programmes seeking only to change behaviour have not been particularly effective in making significant improvements in morbidity or mortality. Finally, behavior change strategies locate the problem within the individual, leading to a tendency to blame the victim for the disease. This paper offers an alternative approach to health education, an approach which seeks to involve citizens in identifying and addressing social and environmental threats to health. From the practices of the women's health movement, the movement for occupational safety and health and the environmental movement in the United States in the last decade, an expanded foundation for health education is suggested. The following principles are illustrated: 1. Health education programmes must include informational, behavioural, political, legal and economic components; 2. Health education for social change recognizes the political character of health and disease; 3. Health education efforts can be rooted in popular struggles for a more just and humane society. 4. Health education activities should address people's day-to-day concerns about their lives and their health. The paper concludes with some specific recommendations on how health educators can include action for social change in their practice.

In a combined lymphangioscopical and ultrastructural examination 7 months post telecobalt 60 irradiation with 60 Gy, the morphological and functional aspects of the inner laryngeal lymph capillaries were studied. The prominent feature of the morphological changes was the endothelial damage of the lymphatic capillaries including swelling, vacuolisation and necrosis. Many lymph vessels were dilated but patent. A few capillaries where collapsed and surrounded by increased amounts of fibrous tissue, some capillaries where lacking their endothelial lining. So degeneration of the endothelial cell i.e. of the endothelial junctions and focal increase of interstitial collagen with resulting stenosis of the capillaries may be observed. The clinical and functional aspects of the morphological findings are discussed.
The damaging effect of methylglucamine diatrizoate on the aortic endothelium is tested and compared to the action of a 22% sorbit solution both with the same hypertonicity. In the first group the contrast medium is injected into the aorta once. In a second group three consecutive injections 5 minutes apart are performed. Aortic specimens are investigated by the "Häutchen" method. The degree of endothelial lesion due to contrast medium is direct proportional to the rate of proliferation of endothelial cells as analized by autoradiography. The damage to the aortic endothelium is independent of number of injections (once or three times). The sorbit solution caused no injury to the aortic endothelium. A generalized endothelial damage--as it is seen in shock--could be excluded.

Bronchial asthma is the major cause of disability in childhood. Among its effects are impaired levels of physical activity and self-esteem, reduced school attendance and performance, and increased utilization of emergency health services. This paper describes the development of a health education program designed to test the hypothesis that better family self-management of asthma can reduce the negative impact of the disease. Three hundred low income Black and Hispanic families were enrolled in the study. Children and primary caretakers were interviewed separately to obtain baseline data on current levels of self-management and to assess needs for educational intervention. Data have been accumulated on a variety of topics concerning asthma self-management, including health practices and beliefs, coping skills, asthma knowledge, and locus of control. An Asthma Self-Management Index was developed to measure positive management behaviors by the family. The needs assessment indicated that six core themes were priorities for these families in terms of relevant skills and behaviors. These topics were incorporated as lesson plans in the intervention.
