[A new pyrimidine-series preparation in the treatment of experimental chemical eye burns].

The effectiveness of a substance of a group of pyrimidine derivatives LUS-3 has been studied in 87 rabbits (174 eyes) with chemical burns of the cornea of degree III. In parallel series of experiments, its action was compared with one of traditional methods of treatment of eye burns using sodium sulfacetamide in combination with subconjunctival injections of autologous blood with penicillin as well as with a pyrimidine derivative--methyluracil. The assessment of the effectiveness of the preparations was made by the picture of the clinical course as well as by data of histologic investigations. The results obtained have shown a pronounced effectiveness of the preparation LUS-3: it accelerated regenerative processes, prevented development of secondary infection, and, as a result, conditioned formation of low-intensive opacifications of the cornea.

[Features of the metabolic activity of the mononuclear phagocytic system in multiple sclerosis patients].

Metabolic activity of the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) was studied in 65 patients with disseminated sclerosis (DS) and 65 control persons by determination of the test-substance biotransformation intensity. Sulfadimezine undergoing acetylation in MPS cells was chosen as a test-substance. Sulfadimezine was administered per os; both unchanged drug and its acetylated metabolite were detected in urine in 6 hours. Correlation between acetylated and non-acetylated sulfadimezine levels permitted dividing the examinees into "rapid" or "slow" acetylators (inactivators). Patients with DS belong mainly to slow acetylators since the test-substance in MPS cells of these patients is inactivated slowly. Correlation between "slow" and "rapid" acetylators in patients with DS was 5:1, that in the control group 2:1. A similar pattern was reported previously in patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. New approaches to the mechanisms of DS development based on MPS functions analysis are outlined.

[Acetylation processes in chronic alcoholics].

The activity of N-acetyltransferase was investigated in chronic alcoholics by the intensity of sulfadimezine acetylation. The activity of the enzyme was shown to vary with the stage of the disease. As compared with control, patients with Stage II disease exhibited the predominance of "rapid" acetylators (60%) whilst a significant fall in the number of "rapid" acetylators (from 60% to 36%) was detected in Stage II disease.

[The effect of ftalazol on the body allowance in rats of B-group vitamins].

A certain decrease in the content of riboflavin in blood plasma and liver and its excretion in the urine were encountered 24-h after administration of phthalazol, according to the schedule of acute dysentery treatment, in rats with initial moderate deficiency in vitamins B1 and B2. The provision with vitamin B1 did not change in this case. The introduction of phthalazol was attended with a noticeable decrease in the excretion of pyridoxic acid but did not affect the B6 content in the liver and blood serum of the animals.
