Dens invaginatus type III: report of a case and 10-year radiographic follow-up.

AIM: The purpose of this article is to report the 10-year follow-up of a right mandibular central incisor with 'dens invaginatus' that was root filled. SUMMARY: 'Dens invaginatus' is a rare malformation of teeth, probably resulting from an infolding of the dental papilla during tooth development. It has alternatively been called 'dens in dente' and 'dilated composite odontome'. Radiographic examination may clearly demonstrate this feature, although no signs may be recognized clinically. If no entrance to the invagination can be detected and there are no signs of pulp pathosis, then no treatment is required other than fissure sealing of the invagination. In deep invaginations, it is likely that root-canal treatment may be required. Occasionally, when the tooth has an immature root, apexification is necessary. Root-canal treatment of a right mandibular central incisor with 'dens invaginatus' is described along with 10-year follow-up. KEY LEARNING POINTS: Both clinical and radiographic examinations are necessary to determine morphological features of teeth before root-canal treatment. Sensibility testing to determine the pulp condition is critical prior to treatment.

Event-by-event analysis of collision-induced cluster-ion fragmentation: sequential monomer evaporation versus fission reactions.

The most abundant decay channels have been studied quantitatively for high-energy (60 keV/amu) cluster ions H (3) (+)(H (2))(m = 1-14) colliding with He atoms employing a recently developed multicoincidence technique for the simultaneous detection of the correlated fragments on an event-by-event basis. This allows us to identify decay reactions and their underlying decay mechanisms responsible for the occurrence of the U-shaped fragmentation pattern.

Thyroid hormone action on astroglial cells from distinct brain regions during development.

Astrocytes are target to triiodothyronine (T3) hormone action during rat brain development. In this work, we show that astrocytes from distinct developing brain regions are differently responsive to thyroid hormone. Distinctly from embryonic or newborn cerebral hemisphere and mesencephalic astrocytes, newborn cerebellar and embryonic hippocampal astrocytes do not change their morphology in response of hormone treatment. We also analysed protein synthesis and secretion from these T3-treated astrocytes. The results showed a significant increase in protein synthesis in astrocytes from older brain regions. Maximum effect, however, was observed in cerebral hemisphere astrocytes from newborn rats. The protein secretion effect was also more evident in the cerebral hemisphere as well as in cerebellar astrocytes from newborn rats. In addition, we examined T3 effects on GFAP/vimentin expression by culturing 6-day old cerebellar astrocytes. In this case T3 seems to induce GFAP expression which might be occurring as a first step to astrocyte differentiation.

Effects [correction of Effecs] of the thyroid hormone (T3) on astrocytes.

Thyroid hormones have profound effects on growth and development. In the brain L-3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3), the bioactive hormone, is involved with the harmonious development acting in neuronal and glial cell differentiation. T3 acts on the cells by interacting with nuclear receptors that can regulate the expression of several genes. Astrocytes also show receptors to the hormone. We reported herein data on the effects of T3 on astrocytes. We have verified that T3 has a morphological effect on cultured cortical astrocytes with rearrangement of GFAP filaments, and induces proliferation in the cultured cerebellar astrocytes of newborn rats. We discuss here the effects of T3 on astrocytes, considering the possibility that thyroid hormone prepares the astrocytes to interact with neurons.

[Comparison of the effects of lofepramin and mianserin in depressed patients in a double blind trial].

The therapeutic efficacy of two newly developed anti-depressants lofepramine and mianserin was compared in a double-blind clinical trial in 30 depressed inpatients. During the treatment period of 4 weeks the depressive symptoms assessed by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression decreased in both groups. In this trial a stronger influence of lofepramine on the factor 'retarded depression' could be demonstrated (p = 0.08). In addition lofepramine showed a significantly better reduction of anxious reactions than mianserin (p less than 0.01). Concerning tolerance, no difference between the two drugs was observed.

[Clinical trial of mepiprazol in the treatment of neurotic inpatients (author's transl)].

Within a controlled double-blind clinical trial the psychopharmacological effect of mepiprazole was tested against placebo in the treatment of neurotic inpatients. Some results of the recorded psychophysiological parameters (tremor, reaction time and flicker fusion threshold) as well as the scores on a symptom checklist for neurotic patients (post hoc divided into three scales by means of factor analysis: anxiety, depression and weaping) indicate a tranquilizing effect of mepiprazol. These findings are discussed critically with regard of methodological problems of testing tranquilizers in psychiatric hospitals.

[Clinical-chemical studies in schizophrenic out-patients under neuroleptic long-term treatment with particular consideration of the hepatic metabolism (author's transl)].

A series of clinical-chemical tests was conducted in 68 schizophrenic out-patients under long-term neuroleptic medication, with particular consideration of the hepatic metabolism, i.e.: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, alpha 1-glycoprotein, ceruloplasmin, fibrinogen, GPT, GOT, gamma-GT, total protein and serum-protein-electrophoresis. Furthermore, the glucose tolerance tests was carried out. In 44% of the patients an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate and positive correlations with increased fibrinogen values were found. Increased gamma-GT-values were proven in 33% of the patients; they correlated positively with the increased GPT-and/or GOT-values as well as with pathological glucose tolerance values. Overweight of more than 10 kilos was found in 46% of the patients. A significant correlation between overweight and pathological glucose tolerance values existed. The results were interpreted as consequence of a light fatty liver.

[Oral glucose tolerance test in schizophrenics under long-term neuroleptic treatment (author's transl)].

The oral glucose tolerance test was carried out in 58 schizophrenics under long-term treatment with different neuroleptic drugs. 74% of the patients showed hyperglycemic reactions. The results did not show any correlation to the age of the patients. The oral glucose tolerance test using 100 g of glucose is recommended as routine procedure instead of the unreliable results of the fasting blood sugar determination. Several hypotheses related to the action of neuroleptics on glucose metabolism are discussed. The authors suggest that glucose tolerance tests and body weight controls should be carried out regularly under long-term neuroleptic treatment.
