Phagocytosis in patients with sickle cell disease.

Twenty sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, homozygous for sickle hemoglobin, were studied during asymptomatic periods. After clinical evaluation, several peripheral phagocyte parameters were evaluated. These were: ingestion rate, percentage of phagocytes with ingested particles, nitro-blue-tetrazolium (NBT) reduction rate, candidacidal activity; as well as serum levels of total haemolytic complement activity (CH50); third and fourth complement components (C3 and C4). Our data show a significant decrease of all studied phagocytosis parameters in the presence of sickle serum which indicate that asymptomatic SCD patients have basically deficient phagocytosis due to serum factors. Nine of the same patients were also evaluated during and after a painful crisis. Our results indicate that a painful crisis is not associated with further abnormalities of phagocytosis in SCD patients.

[Role of the acetylcholine--cholinesterase system in the development of epilepsy].

The report pertains to some data on the cholinesterase activity in the blood serum and CSF of 62 patients with epilepsy, in correlation with different clinical characteristics (the severity of the disease, the character of the EEG, frequency of seizures, treatment efficacy, etc). In 86,8% of the cases there was a significant increase in the activity of serum cholinesterase. Increased cholinesterase activity correlated only with pronounced pathological changes in the EEG (reverse correlation) and the efficacy of treatment (direct correlation). After surgical treatment of 9 cases there was a drop in the cholinesterase activity of the blood serum and CSF, which correlated with an improvement in the general state of the patients. On the basis of personal experience, as well as literary data, it is assumed that an increase in the cholinesterase activity in epileptic patients is not related to the main etiological factors of this disease but is rather a secondary change, a peculiar "symptom" of the disease.

Distinct reovirus-like agents associated with acute infantile gastroenteritis.

Human reovirus-like particles were found by electron microscopy in the stools of 25% of 71 infants and young children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Mexico between December 1976 and April 1977. The virus was also identified by the electrophoresis patterns of its ribonucleic acid upon disruption of partially purified particles. This technique is as reliable as electron microscopy but less laborious, and could become a routine diagnostic procedure. The electrophoretic patterns of viral ribonucleic acid from different cases suggest that there are at least two different reovirus-like agents associated with infantile gastroenteritis.

Immunological response of guinea pigs sensitized with homologous antigens.

The chemical composition of some "immunologically" pure antigens isolated from guinea pig testis and spermatozoa was correlated with their antigenic behavior. Their immunological responses were compared to select the best materials for a further isolation of chemically pure antigens. The glycoprotein extracted from the spermatozoa (T Gly) has the highest immunological potency and seems to be a T and B, depending antigen, able to induce high humoral and cell responses producing germinal cell damage, testicular lesions, and aspermatogenesis.

Effect of the extender supplement Equex-STM on cryopreserved semen in the Assaf sheep.

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of adding the detergent Equex-STM to the extender used to dilute semen for cryopreservation on several indicators of sperm preservation. Two consecutive ejaculates per day were obtained from 5 Assaf sheep on two days out of every week over three alternate months. The freezing protocol involved diluting the semen in Fiser's extender, to which 0.7 percent Equex-STM was added or omitted before cryopreserving the semen in straws by exposure to nitrogen vapor. Equex-STM supplementation gave rise to significantly (p=0.05) improved sperm quality variables after different periods of freezing (0 hours, 1 week and 1 month). The variables examined were: individual motility, viability, acrosome integrity, plasma membrane integrity (HOS test) and morphological anomalies. This improvement was independent of the ram and month of testing. In a second experiment in which we incubated the semen (0 and 6 hours) at 37 degree C after thawing, Equex-STM also showed a beneficial effect on sperm quality.
