Inferior heel spur surgery.

In most instances, pure mechanical heel spur surgery can and should be avoided. The proper diagnosis is extremely important because many different disorders can cause inferior heel pain like that of a mechanical cause. Described throughout the literature are many surgical approaches and techniques for this problem. Personal preference and experience dictates the choice. In some isolated cases, a specifically designed procedure may be necessary. Postoperative care is as important as the surgical procedure itself because recovery usually takes quite a long time.

Active roles in self-help groups for parents of children with cancer.

Quantitative and qualitative data from 43 self-help groups for parents of children with cancer were examined to identify the nature and types of parents' active roles in these groups. Group interviews with 43 self-help groups and individual questionnaires from 131 parent-members indicate that parent active roles in self-help groups often emerge at three levels--interpersonal, organizational, and institutional. Such groups can provide a unique arena for meeting parents' coping needs during a crisis.

Spatial representation of maps.

Two experiments tested the hypothesis that the cognitive representation of spatial relations on a map is primarily a visually keyed process. In Experiment 1, undergraduates studied a labeled map where features were presented either as words alone, as mimetic drawings of the referent, or as geometric symbols. Cued recall data showed that discrete features are best located when they are semantically congruent with the label referent, a fact providing considerable support for the image position. Recognition testing required a set of introspective judgements ordinally related to the interfeature metric on the map. The judgment X distance estimates were highly correlated for all groups, intimating that a high correspondence exists between image distances and the original stimulus metric. Experiment 2 had undergraduates view either a full-scale or a three-quarter reduction of a reference map. Subjects in the reduced version were able to recognize significantly more interfeature comparisons, suggesting a predictable relation between visual and imaginal acuity. The judgement X distance results were essentially the same as in Experiment 1, and the two groups failed to differ in terms of cued recall. Data from both experiments imply that spatial relations are cognitively represented in at least a partially isomorphic fashion, which seems to possess quasi-pictorial qualities.

Laterality preference patterns of learning disabled children.

This study concerned the prediction of group membership of 40 learning disabled and 40 normal children on the basis of preference for laterality of the children and of their parents. A stepwise discriminant analysis showed maternal and paternal lateral preferences could correctly identify approximately 85% of the cases. Orthogonal contrasts showed that, although children themselves did not differ in the degree of laterality, parents of learning disabled children were significantly more bilateral in their preference patterns than normals.

Mode of input in long-term recognition.

Recent research by Garabedian, Yekovich, Sherman, and Dean has demonstrated that recognition from long-term memory was superior for words presented visually over those presented auditorily. Because their results could have been influenced by the salience of the projected visual items, the present investigation attempted to eliminate the possible visual bias. 16 undergraduates were presented a list of nouns of mixed input modality and were tested 6 min. later for incidental recognition of input mode. The present data corroborated findings by Garabedian, et al. who postulated that subjects use some form of stored visual information when identifying the input mode of words.

A new surgical technique for the treatment of pes planus deformity: a preliminary report.

This posteriorly placed, extra-articular, calcaneal osteotomy was developed at the Atlanta Hospital and Medical Center, Atlanta, Georgia. Using a posterior, transverse approach, a frontal or sagittal plane Z-plasty lengthening of the Achilles tendon is performed to gain access to the superior aspect of the calcaneal body. An opening wedge osteotomy is then directed posterior-dorsal to anterior-plantar, to effectively plantarflex the posterior aspect of the calcaneus. It is indicated in clinical conditions involving a sagittal plane flatfoot with minimal heel valgus.

Derotational akin osteotomy.

This paper will present a unique approach utilized at Atlanta Hospital and Medical Center for the correction of a plantar medial shearing callus of the hallux. The procedure is a modification of the Akin osteotomy.
