The effects of unsatisfactory working conditions on the epidemiology of unauthorised absenteeism in an old textile factory in Isfahan, Iran.

Comparison of unauthorised absenteeism rates were made between two large textile factories in Isfahan, Iran. The working conditions in the study factory were rather unsatisfactory, unlike the control factory. Comparison showed significantly higher rates for the study factory: the average annual duration per person was 7 days in the study factory versus 2.5 days in the control factory, and lost time percentage was 2.4% in the former versus 0.84% in the control. Inception rate of persons was 0.73 versus 0.48, and point prevalence rates 0.002 versus 0.001, whilst period prevalence rates were 0.016 versus 0.011 for the study and control factories respectively. Examination of the study factory data was made to determine any possible relationship between unauthorised absenteeism rates and age and length of employment. It was found that higher unauthorised rates were found amongst the younger workers, 100% for those age 19 and under, versus 59.6% for those age 50 and over. 9.16% of workers employed for 1--4 years took such leave against 70.14% of those employed for 10 or more years. Only 18.8% of all workers took certified sickness absenteeism and the rate increased with age. It was suggested that worker dissatisfaction toward unsatisfactory working conditions may be expressed in terms of unauthorised absenteeism. In view of the widespread consequences of such absenteeism, it is recommonded that closer attention be paid to improve the quality of working life.

Ergonomics in traditional Iranian industries.

It is an acknowledged fact that Iranian carpet weavers are subject to excessive fatigue. Earlier investigation has shown this to be largely due to a non-ergonomic body position while working at a traditional loom. It would appear that significantly increased production could be achieved by eliminating or reducing this fatigue. An Iranian engineer has attempted to do this by inventing a metal loom which takes ergonomic factors into consideration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the new loom by comparing the productivity of two groups in Kerman, Iran: one using the new ergonomic loom and the other using the traditional loom. In preliminary investigations various factors were taken into account so that the two groups might be considered comparable. After several observations the average productivity of each weaver was calculated (according to knots per day). The results showed that the ergonomic loom had the highest productivity figures for both sexes and that increased productivity was directly related to the degree of comfort of the carpet weavers.

[Chronic pulmonary heart disease and its risk factors among a worker population in Teheran].

Because of the high frequency of chronic cor pulmonale in workers admitted to the cardiology department of the Khazaneh Hospital in Teheran, we studied the clinical aspect and the risk factors of this disease in 66 male patients. The average age of patients was 56.1 years and they often had a long history of bronchitis isolated or associated with emphysema. The ECG analysis showed that most abnormalities were localized on the QRST wave. Tobacco and a polluted working environment were the factors most frequently met in our patients. The opium habit probably acted as a risk factor for chronic bronchopneumopathy, but further studies are necessary to ascertain the fact.
