Nested fermi surface and electronic instability in Ca3Ru2O7.

High-resolution angular resolved photoemission data reveal well-defined quasiparticle bands of unusually low weight, emerging in line with the metallic phase of Ca(3)Ru(2)O(7) below approximately 30 K . At the bulk structural phase transition temperature of 48 K, we find clear evidence for an electronic instability, gapping large parts of the underlying Fermi surface that appears to be nested. Metallic pockets are found to survive in the small, non-nested sections, constituting a low-temperature Fermi surface with 2 orders of magnitude smaller volume than in all other metallic ruthenates. The Fermi velocities and volumes of these pockets are in agreement with the results of complementary quantum oscillation measurements on the same crystal batches.

Dynamical properties of charged stripes in La2-xSrxCuO4.

Inelastic light-scattering spectra of underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals are presented which provide direct evidence of the formation of quasi-one-dimensional charged structures in the two-dimensional CuO2 planes. The stripes manifest themselves in a Drude-like peak at low energies and temperatures. The selection rules allow us to determine the orientation to be along the diagonals at x=0.02 and along the principal axes at x=0.10. The electron-lattice interaction determines the correlation length which turns out to be larger in compound classes with lower superconducting transition temperatures. Temperature is the only scale of the response at different doping levels demonstrating the importance of quantum critical behavior.

de Haas-van Alphen effect across the metamagnetic transition in Sr3Ru2O7.

We report a study of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect on the itinerant metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7. Extremely high sample purity allows the observation of dHvA oscillations both above and below the metamagnetic transition field of 7.9 T. The quasiparticle masses are fairly large away from the transition, and are enhanced by up to an extra factor of 3 as the transition is approached, but the Fermi surface topography change is quite small. The results are qualitatively consistent with a field-induced Stoner transition in which the mass enhancement is the result of critical fluctuations.

Anisotropy of the incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4: a study with polarized neutrons.

The anisotropy of the magnetic incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering with polarized neutrons. We find a sizable enhancement of the out-of-plane component by a factor of 2 for intermediate energy transfer, which appears to decrease for higher energies. Our results qualitatively confirm calculations of the spin-orbit coupling, but the experimental anisotropy and its energy dependence are weaker than predicted.

Phase diagram of La2-xSrxCuO4 probed in the infared: imprints of charge stripe excitations.

While there is increasing evidence for antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering in the Cu-O planes of high-T(c) superconductors, either static or fluctuating, there is no direct evidence so far for the charge stripes that should separate the AF domains. By investigating the optical response of La2-xSrxCuO4 for 0<or=x<or=0.26 and 30<or=T<or=295 K, we identify strong far infrared peaks whose energy, width, and intensity are consistent with a scenario of charge stripe dynamics in the Cu-O planes.

Universal heat transport in Sr2RuO4.

We present the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity kappa(T) of the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4 down to low temperatures ( approximately 100 mK). In the T-->0 K limit we found a finite residual term in kappa/T, providing clear evidence for the superconducting state with an unconventional pairing. The residual term remains unchanged for samples with different T(c), demonstrating the universal character of heat transport in this spin-triplet superconductor. The low-temperature behavior of kappa suggests the strong impurity scattering with a phase shift close to pi/2. A criterion for the observation of universality is experimentally deduced.
