Age and height as predictors of peak expiratory flow rate in Indian girls.

Peak expiratory flow rate (PEF) was measured on 175 healthy Indian girls in the age range 8-18 years with the help of Wright's Peak Flow Meter. PEF was recorded in the post absorptive phase at least 1 h after breakfast. The subjects rested for 0.5 h before the test procedure and tests were carried out between 1000-11000 hrs to avoid diurnal changes. The highest of three recordings was noted as the subject's PEF. PEF, age, height and body weight were correlated with each other and an intercorrelation matrix between these variables has been designed. It was observed, after performing multivariate regression analysis, that age and height are significant predictors of PEF. A multiple linear regression equation and a nomogram have been constructed for predicting PEF from age and height in young healthy Indian girls.

Fungitoxicity of essential oils against dermatophytes.

Sixteen essential oils were screened in vitro for their fungitoxicity against the two dermatophytes Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum gypseum. Five oils (from Artemisia nelagrica, Caesulia axillaris, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Cymbopogon citratus and Mentha arvensis) showed strong activity and were assessed for their fungitoxicity against eight other dermatophytes as well as against Aspergillus fumigatus and Cladosporium trichoides. These five essential oils by formulation of ointments were able to cure experimental ringworm in guinea pigs within 7 to 12 days. Artemisia oil was found to be the most effective essential oil.

Hypocholesterolaemic effects of dietary fibre.

Role of dietary fibre in lowering serum cholesterol has been studied in mongrel dogs. Pectin, wheat bra, guar gum and Isabghol were fed with standard diet. No statistically significant changes were found in serum cholesterol levels in any groug (P greater than .05) after one week. Later by 15th day, pectin reduced serum cholesterol significantly i.e. 12.4% (P less than .02). However, in groups being fed other forms of fibre the levels of serum cholesterol were reduced by 3.8% to 7.0

Effect of dietary fibre on oral glucose tolerance test.

Role of dietary fibre in lowering blood sugar levels has been studied in mongrel dogs. Pectin, wheat bran, guargum and Isabghol were fed with standard diet. Blood sugar levels were almost the same on 7th day (P less than .05). However, after 15 days pectin reduced blood sugar levels significantly (P less than .05), while other dietary fibre could not bring significant effect on blood sugar levels (P less than .05).

Prediction of some ventilatory 'norms' in healthy Indian males 21-69 years age.

This paper presents regression equations for predicting some ventilatory 'norms' (viz. vital capacity, forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume for one second, expiratory reserve volume, inspiratory capacity and maximum voluntary ventilation) from physical characteristics of healthy Indian males. These equations have been constructed on the basis of multivariate regression analysis of the data of ventilatory 'norms' and physical characteristics collected on 171 healthy Indian males of age ranging from 21-69 years. Applications of these regression equations will be of practiced importance to biomedical scientists interested in the indirect assessment of ventilatory 'norms for a wider age range (21-69 years) which has not been covered by earlier studies carried out in this direction.
