Mapping personal, familial, and professional values in long-term care decisions.

We mapped the values of elders, family members or friends, and professionals involved in a recently implemented long-term care decision, based on 60 in-depth retrospective interviews. The language used to express values by elders and family members was often quite expressive and particular, whereas professionals tended to employ a more abstract and formulaic language of values. Elders emphasized self-identity and environment, whereas for families and professionals health and well-being of the elder were important.

Scholarly productivity of geriatrics senior faculty members and faculty trainees compared with that of other health professions educators.

To compare the scholarly productivity levels of senior geriatrics educators and faculty trainees, and to compare their productivity with those of other faculty groups, the authors analyzed questionnaires completed in 1988 by 97 senior staff members of geriatrics education centers nationwide and in 1985-1989 by 91 faculty enrollees in the year-long professional development program of the Texas Consortium of Geriatric Education Centers. The chief difference between the two groups was that more senior educators (75%) than enrollees (40%) had published in the three years previous to completing the questionnaire. The authors conclude that the productivity levels of the two groups compare favorably with previously reported productivity levels of health sciences faculties in general.

Prescreening at-risk elders for entry into a community-based long-term care program.

Despite the expansion of community-based service alternatives, demand for case coordinated community care continues to rise. Many programs, under pressure to target their services to te most disabled, have developed comprehensive entry criteria to determine eligibility. Their criteria generally require an in-person assessment to make the determination, but because of the volume of potential applicants, in-person assessment of each applicant has proven to be impractical. Although most programs have developed some type of screening method and a wide range of approaches are used, little research exists to validate the screening efforts. This study reports on a screening method used in the national channeling demonstration and compares the results of a telephone screen to the results of an in-person assessment.
