[Chronic prostatitis: 1) etiology, pathogenesis, modeling, classification].

Apparently, chronic prostatitis subsequently is becoming a disease of not only young and middle-aged men. Its significance in geriatrics is remarkably growing over the past years. Besides, one may note a hurricane-like enlargement of a research literature on this problem. This is linked with countless updated results on prostate morpho-functional peculiarities as well as on causative agents, mechanisms, remodeling, clinical course, and therapeutic approaches on prostatitis. The necessity of summarizing, analysis and discussion of these results is undoubted. Because of enormous material the represented overview of literature has been subdivided in 2 parts, the first of which is given above.

[Contribution of I. V. Davydovskiy in the development of gerontology].

This article represents a historical review concerning a period of work of prominent Russian pathologist Prof. I. Davydovski on a field of gerontology. At the end of his professional activity I. Davydovski has organized a gerontological laboratory. His research works have been summarized in the popular monograph "Gerontology", which appeared in 1966. This book served as a guidance in general and systemic gerontology for many years.

[Lymphangion in health and in lymphedema].

Comparative analysis of lymphangion construction in different organs and sites of human body is performed. Quantitative parameters of lymphangions (length, width, volume) are found to have age and site peculiarities. Myo-myocyte contacts of the nexus type and fascicular-reticular organizational principle of the cells underly myocyte association into functional syncytium. The valve consists of a muscleless fold and valvular bolster containing muscles. Restructuring of lymphangions in lower limb lymphedema are observed. In the course of the disease progression myocyte atrophy occurs which is followed by lymphangion wall collagenization. The alterations in lower limb lymphangions are proportional to the gravity of the disease.

[Apud cells in endometrial cancer].

55 endometrial carcinomas containing apud cells are studied. Correlation between the endocrine-metabolic disturbances and mitotic index, on the one hand, and number of apud cells and their product on the other, is revealed. If the percentage of apud cells is above 20 of all parenchymal cells, low mitotic index in the tumour, marked production of serotonin, calcitonin and other hormones and high incidence of endocrine disturbances together with a relatively favourable prognosis are observed. Low number of apud cells associated with high mitotic index and high incidence of unfavourable outcomes while the hormone production and endocrine disturbances were rare or absent.

[Teaching pathology in European countries].

Similarities and differences of pathology teaching in various European universities are described concerning mainly the number of academic hours assigned to different sections of pathology. General problems in the organization of higher, including medical, education are discussed. Rules and statuses of the European universities are considered in the light of the forthcoming reforms in Russian universities.

[Biomechanisms of the progression of malignant neoplasms].

This theoretical review is presented in the form of a lecture and starts with the definitions of basic notions in the tissue biology and histology: differentiation, competence, integrity, cloe, differon, differon heterogeneity, tissue. The mechanisms of the tumour progression on the non-invasive, invasive and metastatic stage are considered. Seven main types of the target cell genome restruction in the process of the malignant transformation and 4 variants of changes in regulation of the protooncogene activity in the transformed cells are distinguished. A particular reference is made to the two aspects of progression 1) the rate of increase and variant (limits) of the tumour cells variability, 2) the selection productivity in the tumour population. The main emphasis is made on the process of disintegration, competence change. The variants of the tumour tissue composition are considered. The theory of four-step invasion and "cascade" theory of metastasizing as well as the concept of the adaptive tumour cell selection and the variants of the compensatory changes at different stages of the progression are characterized in detail.

[Pathogenesis of the tumor process].

The paper deals with fundamentals underlying current views on cancerogenesis, morphogenesis and tumor growth with special emphasis on the mechanisms of malignant sequential and spasmodic transformation of target cells, a morphologic pattern of malignant transformation (uni- and multicenter development, tumor field theories) and mechanisms of tumor dissemination. Recent conceptions and theories are delineated. Original ideas of the nature of neoplastic process are suggested.

[Case of death from trichinosis with acute lesions of the stomach and small intestine].

A 54-year old man was hospitalized with such acute complaints, as vomiting, fatigue, severe gastric pain, progressive weight loss. Gastric cancer was suspected, but the severity of the patient's state excluded X-ray examination of the stomach. The death occurred on day 9 of the hospital stay. It was only the microscopic pathoanatomic examination of the stomach and small intestine, that revealed trichinosis. Absence of Trichinella larvae in the gastric mucosa was suggestive of a massive alimentary infection in the patient.

[Specific chromosomal changes (aberrations)--supplementary marker of malignant degeneration in oncomorphologic studies].

The paper deals with some methods studying chromosome set in tumour cells. The latest data on tumour chromosome aberrations are reported. The latter are subdivided by the authors into non-specific and specific, characteristic only of certain variants of tumour differentiation, and are of diagnostic significance. The authors put forward further tasks of combined oncomorphologic and cytogenetic studies of specific chromosome aberrations as a valuable marker for the diagnosis of malignancy.

[Relation between lymphogenous metastasis of cancer of the rectum and the structure and function of the lymphatic bed].

Lymph vessels of the rectum in health and during early stages of metastasizing rectal cancer were studied. It was shown that changes occurring at this stage constitute the "cascade" process whose stages are determined by 3 structural elements of the rectal lymphatic vasculature, i. e. capillary, postcapillary, and vessel. Compensatory adaptive changes in the lymphatic routes in rectal cancer and in cases of secondary metastases to the rectum were examined.

[Metastasis of one tumor into another in multiple primary neoplasms].

Eight patients had two tumours located in different organs: one of these tumours was carcinoma which metastasized into another, histologically benign neoplasm. Morphological characteristics of the two tumours, sources of metastases and metastasis "recipients", are described. The order of their clinical manifestations was followed up.

[Cardiac lesions in generalized hematogenic tuberculosis].

A case of a generalized hematogenous tuberculosis with exacerbation in a woman of 62 is described. The disease had an undulating course and was manifested by a rare combination of miliary lung tuberculosis with extrapulmonal lesions. The latter included cavernous spondylitis with two paravertebral abscesses, fibrinous pericarditis and a large-focal lesion in the myocardium.
