[Results of radiation monitoring in Moscow region over 1957-2005].

The article contains data on radiation situation in Moscow region, characteristics of overall beta-activity of ambient air, fall-out density, radionuclide contents of foods. Radionuclides content of environment appeared to decrease by 2-3 orders. Individual doses of internal irradiation for Moscow population are 100 times lower than the levels legally set for technogenic sources.

[Monitoring of food products from genetically modified sources in Moscow].

This paper presents results of a detection of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in food from the shops of Moscow. The screening methods and event-specific assay based on the polymerase chain reaction is used. Transgenic DNA from genetically modified soybeans line 40-3-2 is detected in 17.2% samples of studied foods. Soybeans line 40-3-2 is allowed in Russian food supply.

Diphtheria toxoid vaccine effectiveness: A case-control study in Russia.

Prior to the completion of this and other studies, low effectiveness of diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccine was suspected to be a major contributing factor to the diphtheria epidemic that began in the Russian Federation in 1990. A vaccine effectiveness study was done in Moscow by enrolling physician-diagnosed cases and 10 control subjects per case. Controls were matched to cases by age (+/-3 months) and clinic registration. Vaccination history was abstracted from a standardized form for case-patients and from clinic vaccination records for control subjects. Two hundred seventeen case-patients and 2169 matched controls were included in the study. Most controls (92%) had received three or more doses of a diphtheria toxoid vaccine, compared with 72% of case-patients. The vaccine effectiveness for three or more doses was 97% (95% confidence interval: 94.3-98.4). Low vaccine effectiveness was not a contributing factor to the diphtheria epidemic in the Russian Federation. To control and prevent diphtheria epidemics, it is necessary to achieve and maintain high vaccination coverage with three or more doses of diphtheria toxoid among adults and children.

[Immunoenzyme test system for detecting antibodies to group-specific antigens of group A Streptococcus on the base of conjugated N-acetylglucosamine and its use in medical practice].

Enzyme immunoassay kit has been created for detecting antibodies to group A Streptococcus, based on N-acetylglucosamine. N-acetylglucosamine was selected as the group-specific determinant due to the structure of group A Streptococcus polysaccharide, in which this monosaccharide residue is lateral to the main polysaccharide chain and hence more available for antibodies. Water-soluble polyacrylamide is the carrier in this kit, for this carrier is stable and not liable to nonspecific reaction with proteins. In addition, the synthesis of polyacrylamide conjugates ensures reproducible results. Use of this kit permits the identification of group A streptococcal etiology of the disease and thus carry out appropriate therapy; moreover, it helps predict the outcome of an acute streptococcal infection and detect the poststreptococcal complications in the early period of the disease.

[The use of the cluster selection method for assessing the status of immunity to controlled infections (measles, diphtheria and tetanus)].

The use of the method of cluster selection in mass serological examination makes it possible to obtain statistically significant results with very low expenditures. The coincidence of the results on the number of seronegative children, obtained by the method of cluster selection, with the results of mass serological examination of all children aged 6-7 years in the district (children found to be seronegative to measles constituted 5.5% and 5.0% respectively) is indicative of the statistical significance of the method used in this investigation. The results obtained by the method of cluster selection indicate that the level of protection among the children of the district was high both with respect to measles (94.5 +/- 1.8%) and tetanus (96.5 +/- 1.7%); with respect to diphtheria, the immune stratum was found to be less (91.1 +/- 2.3%). These data may be helpful in working out scientifically substantiated administrative decisions contributing to an increase in the effectiveness of planned mass immunization.

[The use of computers and mathematical methods for optimizing epidemic control measures with respect to measles infection].

The potentialities of computers for the study of the effectiveness of immunization have been demonstrated and the mathematical model for the prediction of the proportion of children, seronegative to measles, derived on the basis of the data on the average measles morbidity in different groups for a given period. A multifactor analysis of a large scope of data obtained in seroepidemiological survey and a retrospective analysis of measles morbidity on the basis of data collected in two districts of Moscow have been carried out with the use of computers and mathematical methods.

[The fibronectin binding of salmonellae studied by a passive hemagglutination method].

The study has shown that the fibronectin-binding properties of different Salmonella species can be tested by means of passive hemagglutination with fibronectin-sensitized formulated sheep red blood cells (SRBC). S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium isolated from foodstuffs, as well as the representatives of the species S. kottbus, S. anatum, S. tshiongwe and S. newlands, are capable of binding fibronectin. Fibronectin-binding properties have also been detected in Shigella sonnei, as well as in eubiotic microorganisms Escherichia coli M 17 and Lactobacillus plantarum. In pH ranging from 6.5 to 7.4 salmonellae, shigellae and E. coli agglutinate fibronectin-sensitized SRBC much more effectively in acidic pH values, while changes in pH have been found to produce no essential influence on the fibronectin-binding capacity of Staphylococcus aureus and lactobacilli.

[The validation of the expediency of a review of the times for revaccinating children against measles].

Basing on the results of seroepidemiological study, carried out in two districts of Moscow by different methods, cluster selection method including, the authors have developed the following recommendations aimed at improving the strategy of revaccination against measles: (1) selective revaccination of only seronegative children or those with poor antimeasles immunity should be carried out, thus making it possible to reduce the number of susceptible children and diminish the risk of postimmunization reactions and complications; (2) when determining the groups of children to be revaccinated and the age suitable for revaccination, one should bear in mind the specific local features of the epidemic process in measles and the morbidity values, as well as the data on antimeasles immunity in children of different age groups; (3) serologic monitoring of the quality and immunologic effectiveness of different batches of live measles vaccine permits timely removal of nonstandard batches from practical use, thus improving the efficacy of vaccinal prophylaxis of measles.

[The status of the morbidity and the main trends in the improvement of the epidemiological surveillance of sexually transmitted infections in the city of Moscow].

The present situation in sexually transmitted diseases (STD) is regarded as unfavorable. Differing tendencies in morbidity levels for various nosological forms have been established. The continuing growth of syphilis morbidity among children is considered to be specially alarming, and an increase in the number of cases of congenital syphilis is noted. The reasons of the growth of STD morbidity have not only medical, but mainly socio-economical, psychological, ethical and moral character. The main trends in the improvement of epidemiological surveillance on STD have been determined.
