[The efficacy of active specific immunotherapy using modified neoplastic cells in the combined modality treatment of hemoblastoses].

Efficiency was studied of active specific immunotherapy (IT) with cell vaccine consisting of allogenic viable cryopreserved modified Con A blast cells identical with the illness in patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The studies made confirmed a positive impact of IT on the clinical course of acute leukosis (prolonged remission, keeping down infectious complications), on leukopoiesis, peripheral blood cells enzymatic status as well as on cell immunity, certain factors of humoral immunity and bodily natural antineoplastic resistance.

[The results of studies of the peripheral blood from children in Polesie District, Kiev Province and in the city of Kiev 4 years after the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

The peripheral blood of 2200 children (age: from 2 to 16 years) inhabiting the Polessye District of Kiev Province and the city of Kiev 4 years after the Chernobyl atomic station accident was studied. An analysis of results revealed the presence of hematologic changes that may be interpreted as sequels of the effect of ionizing radiation on the body, while other changes may be considered as reactive and may in most cases accompany different somatic diseases of infectious-inflammatory character.

[The immunophenotypic and cytogenetic characteristics of the blast cells in subvariants of acute myeloid leukemia].

The results of study of morpho-cytochemical peculiarities, antigenic profile and peripheric blood and/or bone marrow blast cell karyotype of 21 patients with acute myeloid leukemia are presented. Hemopoietic cell immunophenotyping was carried out with the use of cytofluorometer FACScan and chromosome cytogenetic analysis with the use of analyzer "Metascan". It has been shown that in the AML M1 blast cell plasmatic membrane carries pan-myeloid CD33 and CD13 antigens, the last having high density of expression, and the CD38 antigen, which is a myeloid cell-precursor marker. In these patients tetraploidy, being the testimony of karyotype change, has been ascertained. It has been found out that the AML M2 blasts, except pan-myeloid antigens, express the cell proliferation CD71 marker. Blast cell karyotype peculiarities typical for this leukemia sub-variant have been revealed. In patients with the AML M4 in 3 of 6 cases an anomalous karyotype has been found. It has been also shown that the CD14 antigen, and rather its percentage in blast total population, is the differential-diagnostic criterion for the AML M4 and M5.

[Hemoglobin-induced lipid peroxidation in anemia].

Changes were studied in processes of peroxide oxidation of lipid (LPO), such as neutral lipids and phospholipids, as related to the levels of hemoglobin (Hb) and its derivatives, methemoglobin (Met-Hb) and carboxyhemoglobin (CO-Hb) in erythrocytes and blood plasma of 33 patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). It has been found out that in IDA, decline in the concentration of Hb correlates with augmentation of the content of Met-Hb (r = -0.670, P = 0.038). Increase in the level of Met-Hb is accompanied by an accumulation in erythrocytes of Schiff bases as the final products of phospholipids peroxidation (r = 0.586, P = 0.004), CO-Hb-substrates of LPO (r = 0.425, P = 0.049), primary (r = 0.453, P = 0.04) and secondary (r = 0.438, P = 0.048) molecular products of peroxide oxidation of neutral lipids. A mechanism is discussed of the Hb derivatives Met-Hb and CO-Hb concurrence in the activation of LPO in IDA.

[The criteria for forming risk groups among the population exposed to ionizing radiation after the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station].

Studied were particular features of peripheral blood, certain immunological and biochemical indices under long-term exposure of human body to radiation after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The study comprised 5578 individuals. The examinees were liquidators of the Chernobyl accident sequels (n = 1052), inhabitants of Pripyat evacuated from the town (n = 850), the Kiev SSBT primary donors (n = 1738). Control group consisted of 936 Kievans who had been examined before the accident between 1982-1985 by the same methods. The results obtained allowed for the most informative indices to be found in order that risk groups might be formed.

[The clinico-morphological characteristics of myeloid leukemias under the current ecological conditions in Ukraine].

Results are submitted of examination of 93 bone marrow trepanobiopsies from iliac bone of patients with acute and chronic leukemia they developed during 1993-1996. Some aspects are considered of haemopoiesis and stromal elements together with morphological features of the medical problem in question in present-day environmental health-hazard conditions. With AML and CML running aggressive course, the incidence rates of granulocytic and megakaryocytic CML being on the increase, the outlook for tomorrow is not bright. All this (emergence of tissue optically dense "dark impregnations" are also worthy of mention in this context) is deemed to bear relation to adverse ecological conditions nowadays.

[The efficacy of using thymalin and plasmapheresis in the combined treatment of patients with chronic lympholeukemia].

Results are submitted of study of the effectiveness of inclusion into the treatment program for patients with chronic lymphoid leukemia of specific (thymalin) and unspecific (plasmapheresis) means and modes of immune correction, which made for more rapid attaining clinical and hematological compensation by comparison with chemotherapeutic agents only. Furthermore, the method of combined use of drugs, attempted for the first time, permitted the functional activity of the lymphoid system to be improved, with the clinical and hematological compensation being achieved in a shorter space of time.
