[The effect of the postoperative use of a palatal plate for the prevention of maxillary contraction in cleft palate].

We have already reported that the maxillary was markedly contracted 1 month after a cleft palate operation. Since we thought that this was mainly attributable to cicatrized contraction of the operation region, we prepared a palatal plate and inserted it from an early stage after palate plasty. In this paper we present our summarized findings on the use of the palatal plate. We report on its use both immediately after the operation, and for a period of 3 months after the operation. Its use in both cases is intended to prevent maxillary contraction following surgical treatment of the cleft palate.

Cleft Palate

Three-dimensional analysis of facial morphology using moiré stripes. Part I. Method.

A system is presented for analysing facial morphology using moiré stripes. Faces are photographed with a moiré camera, the moiré stripes are entered into a computer, and the computer automatically analyses the dimensions of the face. Subtle differences between the right and left sides of the face appear as asymmetries in the moiré pattern and are easily identified. The method is useful for analysing maxillofacial deformities, for treatment planning, and assessment of postoperative results.

Cleft Lip

Three-dimensional analysis of facial morphology using moiré stripes. Part II. Analysis of normal adults.

This paper presents a system for analysing facial morphology using moiré stripes in 60 normal Japanese high-school students. Analysis of the central region of the face revealed consistent differences between the sexes and between the right and left sides of the face. On the basis of these data, it is suggested that 1 mm difference should be considered permissible between the 2 sides of the upper lip in cases of lip repair in cleft lip and palate patients.

Adolescent

Incidence of cleft lip and/or palate in Aichi prefecture. Comparison of the incidence in Aichi prefecture (1982-1987) with those data of other districts in Japan.

To determine the incidence of cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in Aichi prefecture, 485,085 infants born between Jan. 1, 1982, and Dec. 31, 1987, were investigated. 385 infants (0.154%) were found to have these abnormalities; approximately 1.54/1000 live births. Of these infants the number of CL, CLP, and CP was 152 (34.0%), 212 (47.4%), and 83 (18.6%), respectively, (including 1981). These data were compared with those of other prefectures in Japan. The incidence of cleft lip and/or palate in Aichi prefecture was close to the mean for the whole country.

Child

Epidemiological investigation on cleft palate patterns and sexual difference.

Sexual difference in severity of the cleft palate was studied in 179 patients. An appreciable correlation was found between the severity of cleft and sex: more females showing higher levels of severity, and no sexual difference existing in less severe cases. The results of our current investigations suggested close correlation between the pathogenic factors and sex in the above patients with cleft palate.

Cleft Palate

[Experimental study on the cleft lip and palate. VIII. Induction of cleft palate in Wistar rats by vitamin A].

We tried to induce cleft palate in Wistar rats by injecting Vitamin A. We injected Vitamin A into the stomach of females when they were pregnant on the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh day. We them sacrificed them to observe the fetuses while they were still pregnant on the eighteenth-twentieth day. The results showed that a high rate of cleft palate could be induced by injecting 5-10 x 10(4) I.U/kg of Vitamin A during pregnancy on the tenth day.

Animals

[Epidemiological investigation of cleft lip and/or palate. II. Incidence of cleft lip and palate among Japanese babies in Gifu prefecture 1986 to 1987].

Since 1981 we have been conducting investigations in Aichi Prefecture where our institution is located in close cooperation with Medical Association of Obstetrics-Gynecologists and member physicians of the Midwives Association. In addition, we surveyed 111 institutions in Gifu Prefecture for the patient who was delivered from January 1, 1986 to December 31, 1987 to learn the incidence and type classification of cleft lip and/or palate in the general population Gifu. Consequently, we acquired the date of 20667 newborns. It was found as a result that 35 babies had these abnormalities and that ratio of the birth of such newborns was one for 590.5 deliveries. Among 35 cleft infants 12 (34.3%) with cleft lip and palate, 5 (14.3%) cleft palate. Looking at the estimates from the results of our investigation, the annual number of newborns with these disease in the Gifu Prefecture was 41.6 to 41.9 in 1986, 33.5 to 33.6 in 1987 with 95 percent confidence limits.

Cleft Lip

The prevalence of cleft lip and plate in Japanese.

To determine the prevalence of cleft lip and palate (CL/P) among the Japanese, 43,821 babies born between 1 January, 1985, and 31 December, 1985, were investigated. Sixty-four infants (0.146%) were found to demonstrate these abnormalities, a birth prevalence rate of 1.46/1000. Among 326 infants in whom it was possible to classify the types of cleft, born between 1 January, 1981, and 31 December, 1985, there were 111 (34.0%) with cleft lip (CL), 154 (47.3%) with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and 61 (18.7%) with cleft palate (CP).

Cleft Lip

The prevalence of cleft lip and palate in the Japanese: their birth prevalence in 40,304 infants born during 1982.

To determine the prevalence of cleft lip and palate (CL/P) among the Japanese, 40,304 infants born between Jan. 1, 1982, and Dec. 31, 1982, were investigated. Eighty-three infants (0.206%) were found with these abnormalities in approximately 2.06/1000 live births. Among fifty-two infants in whom it was possible to classify the types of cleft, seventeen (32.7%) had cleft lip only (CL), twenty-four (46.1%) had cleft lip and palate (CLP), and eleven (21.2%) had isolated cleft palate (CP).
