Flexor tendon growth in chickens.

We investigated the longitudinal growth of the flexor tendon in detail by marking tendons along their lengths in young chickens, using a microsurgical technique, and observing the separation of the marks at various times during tendon growth to establish normative standardized data on the longitudinal growth of flexor tendons. The interstitium throughout the entire tendon was found to increase in length, although the growth at the insertion zone was less marked than that in other areas. To determine the relationship between the growth of the tendon and the growth of the underlying bone, the lengths of the phalanges and metatarsus were measured. The distance from the insertion to the bifurcation of the tendon and the distance from the bifurcation to the most distal point of the musculotendinous junction also were measured. The findings suggest that the growth of tendon is proportionate to the growth of underlying bone. Tendon growth at the musculotendinous junction was studied in further detail, and no significant difference was found between growth at the most proximal zone of the tendon and growth at the zone within the musculotendinous junction.

Tendon growth in rabbits.

The longitudinal growth of the Achilles and tibialis anterior tendons in young rabbits was investigated. At 5 weeks of age, sutured marks were placed along the entire length of each tendon from the musculotendinous junction to the portion near the osseous attachment using a microsurgical technique. The distances between the marks were measured using a microscope with a micro ruler. At 16 weeks of age, all distances between the marks had increased. In the Achilles tendon, none of the intermark distances differed significantly. In the tibialis anterior, the retinaculum is situated between the musculotendinous junction and the insertion, and acts as a pulley, so this tendon was divided into 2 zones, one proximal and one distal to the retinaculum, and the intermark distances were measured. There were no significant differences among these distances in proximal, or distal zones, but those in the proximal zone were greater than those in the distal zone (< 0.01). Furthermore, in a separate experiment, the longitudinal growth of the underlying bone in the zone proximal to the retinaculum was found to be greater than that in the distal zone (p < 0.01).

Persistent ulcer of the knee.

A 15-year-old female suffered from a persistent ulcer which developed in her knee. At the ninth operation, intraarticular knee arthrodesis was performed but the ulcer recurred. The most effective treatment was neither thorough debridement nor a free musculocutaneous flap covering, but the application of a plaster cast. The condition is thought to have been Munchausen syndrome.

Structural studies of the contractile tail sheath protein of bacteriophage T4. 2. Structural analyses of the tail sheath protein, Gp18, by limited proteolysis, immunoblotting, and immunoelectron microscopy.

The molecular structure of the T4 phage tail sheath protein, gp18, was studied by limited proteolysis, immunoblotting, and immunoelectron microscopy. Gp18 is extremely resistant to proteolysis in the assembled form of either extended or contracted sheaths, but it is readily cleaved by proteases in the monomeric form, giving rise to stable protease-resistant fragments. Limited proteolysis with trypsin gave rise to a trypsin-resistant fragment, Ala82-Lys316, with a molecular weight of 27K. Chymotrypsin- and thermolysin-resistant fragments were also mapped close to the trypsin-resistant region. The time course of trypsin digestion of the monomeric gp18 as monitored by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting of the gel revealed that the polypeptide chain consisting of 658 amino acid residues is sequentially cleaved at several positions from the C terminus. The N-terminal portion, Thr1-Arg81, was then removed to form the trypsin-resistant fragment. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that the polyclonal antibodies against the trypsin-resistant fragment bound to the tail sheath. This supported the idea that at least part of the protease-resistant region of gp18 constitutes the protruding part of the sheath protein as previously revealed with three-dimensional image reconstruction from electron micrographs by Amos and Klug [Amos, L. A., & Klug, A. (1975) J. Mol. Biol. 99, 51-73].

[Epidemiological study on Chlamydia trachomatis infection in pregnant housewives and investigation on its influence on outcome of pregnancy and on their newborns].

We surveyed Chlamydial infection with Chlamydiazyme for 3010 pregnant housewives in Hokkaido. Four hundred and fourty six out of the 3010 pregnant housewives were also be retrospectively investigated for the influence of C. trachomatis on outcome of pregnancy and on their newborns. The results were as follows. 1) Of the 3010 pregnant housewives, 217 (7.2%) were C. trachomatis-antigen positive, when their endocervical specimens were tested. There was no difference in the positive rate of C. trachomatis among the six cities where our investigation was performed. 2) A high C. trachomatis-positive rate (21.9%) was achieved in the pregnant teen-aged housewives with a significant decrease as age increased. 3) As for placenta previa, threatened abortion, preterm delivery and small for date infants, the incidence was higher in the untreated C. trachomatis positive group than in the C. trachomatis negative group. 4) The weeks of gestation and birth weight of newborns in the untreated C. trachomatis positive group were significantly lower than those of the C. trachomatis negative group. 5) No statistical significance was found in the incidence of premature rupture of membrane, fatal distress, spontaneous abortion nor postpartum fever between the C. trachomatis negative group and the untreated C. trachomatis positive group. These results suggest that Chlamydial infection in pregnant housewives is widely spread in Hokkaido and gives some disadvantage to pregnancy outcome and newborns. Consequently, Chlamydial infection in pregnant women must be appropriately diagnosed and treated in the early stage of pregnancy.

[The study on Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in a hospital--2. Bacteriological study].

We investigated the hospital acquired infection of P. aeruginosa in urological wards by determining the serotype and testing the sensitivity of this bacteria to antibiotics. The results were as follows: 1. 92 strains of G-serotype (22.2%), 76 of A-serotype (18.3%) and 65 of B-serotype (15.7%) were predominantly found in the serotype distribution of 415 P. aeruginosa strains isolated from urine or feces. 2. Comparing the sensitivity of P. aeruginosa to various antibiotics determined by MIC50 (the concentration to inhibit growth of 50% of the objective bacteria), Dibekacin showed MIC50 of 0.78 microgram/ml, Ceftazidime 1.56 micrograms/ml, Cefsulodin 3.13 micrograms/ml, and Polymixin-B, Piperacillin, Aztreonam 6.25 micrograms/ml. The analysis of the relationship between serotype and sensitivity to antibiotics demonstrated that K-serotype of P. aeruginosa tended to be highly sensitive and M-serotype be less sensitive to only Dibekacin. There was no definite relation of serotype to sensitivity against any other antibiotics. The comparison of sensitivity to antibiotics determined by MIC50,80 between P. aeruginosa isolated from urine and that from feces revealed that the former was less sensitive by one to four grades than the latter. The sensitivity of P. aeruginosa isolated from feces at admission was not different from that at discharge. In the chronological changes in sensitivity of P. aeruginosa isolated from urine, the strains highly resistant to Cefsulodin, Ceftazidime, Aztreonam and Dibekacin had increased in 1984 and 1985. 3. These highly resistant strains tended to break out in the urological wards, which suggested the need for more intensive prophylactic measures against hospital acquired infection.

Growth of autografted tendons: an experimental study in vivo.

The growth of transplanted tendons was investigated in 54 young chickens. The transplantations were done within the first week of life. The flexor digitorum profundus tendon in the digital sheath of the right third digit was replaced by a graft taken from the same tendon of the left third digit. The growth of the grafted tendons was measured and compared with control tendons at the first, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, and twentieth week after the operation. Five weeks after operation the grafted tendons showed the same growth rate as the control tendons. Although tendon growth was retarded compared with the control tendons 15 weeks after operation, it was not statistically different at 20 weeks.
