This study aimed to detail the clinicopathologic features of endometrial carcinomas that developed in Japanese patients receiving adjuvant tamoxifen treatment for breast cancer patients. Ten endometrial carcinomas in tamoxifen-treated breast cancer patients were collected from two medical centers. The endometrial carcinomas included two stage Ia, four stage Ib, two stage Ic and two stage IIIc. Three tumors were Grade 1, six were Grade 2, and one was Grade 3. The tumor was limited to the endometrium in two cases. Myometrial invasion was limited to the inner half of the myometrium in five cases and involved the outer half in three. A mild degree of lymphovascular space invasion was identified in five cases. Deep cervical invasion was recognized in one case. The cell types comprised nine endometrioid adenocarcinomas and one serous carcinoma. Five of eight postmenopausal endometrial carcinomas were associated with polypoid endometrial lesions composed of cystically dilated atrophic and proliferative glands widely separated by fibrotic stroma. Two patients with retroperitoneal lymph node metastases died of endometrial cancer. One patient developed a contralateral breast cancer during tamoxifen treatment. No patient died of breast cancer. We did not demonstrate a higher frequency of either high-grade tumors or unfavorable histologic subtypes in tamoxifen-treated Japanese breast cancer patients.
Adult dry weights of laboratory-reared Anopheles darlingi were highly correlated with wing lengths, which were used to estimate size variation in natural populations of this species. Significant differences in mean wing lengths of females trapped at baits were detected among collections in the same week at one site, but not between three sites in Brazil and Bolivia. Relatively higher variability of wing lengths, compared to collections of other Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus), and platykurtic size distributions in large, single-night collections suggested that An. darlingi females caught at baits emerged from heterogenous larval habitats. No relationship was detected between parous state and the body size of wild-caught females. Adult males and females of laboratory-reared An. darlingi did not differ in body size. This absence of sexual size dimorphism is rare among mosquitoes and has not been noted previously in the genus Anopheles.
Ouabainlike factors are thought to be a kind of important modulators of salt and water metabolism in essential hypertension. We purified the binding-protein of ouabain (OBP) from human plasma. The amino-terminal sequence of OBP from human plasma, (NH2-TLGQPREPQVYTLPPXREEM-), indicated that OBP is the carboxy-terminal fragment (14.4 kDa by SDS-PAGE) from T218 of IgG2 heavy chain and from A221 of the IgG1 heavy chain constant region. Moreover, plasmin-cleaved Fc fragment (pFc) of IgG possessed the ouabain-binding activity by the gel-filtration method of pFc and authentic ouabain mixture, whereas neither intact, aggregate, nor papain-cleaved Fc fragment did. The amino-terminal sequence of pFc was NH2-THTXPPXPAPELLGGPXVFL-, and this sequence corresponded to the T105 to L125 fragment of the IgG1 heavy chain constant region. The growth of cultured THP-1 cells were arrested in the dose-dependent manner by ouabain, which was inhibited by the addition of 20 microg/mL of pFc. These results suggested that plasmin-cleaved Fc of human IgG is one of the binding protein of ouabain/ouabainlike factor(s) in human plasma.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cavity form and setting expansion of refractory die materials on the adaptability of fired ceramic inlays. Standardized Class I cavities with three kinds of lateral wall divergences (10 degrees, 20 degrees, and 30 degrees) and three kinds of surface roughness were prepared in epoxy resin blocks. A refractory die was prepared from an impression of the epoxy resin cavity, whose setting expansion ranged from 0.01 to 1.13%. A ceramic inlay was fired on each die. The fabricated inlay was inserted into the epoxy resin cavity, and the interfacial distance between the ceramic inlay and the cavity wall at the margin was measured using a reflecting microscope at X100 magnification. The internal fit was measured after sectioning the specimen longitudinally. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and Sheffé's F test. Good adaptation was achieved with the smooth-surface cavity. The adaptability depended on the angle of the cavity divergence, and small gaps were observed in 20 degrees and 30 degrees cavities (P < 0.05). The inlays fabricated on the refractory dies with a small setting expansion demonstrated small internal gaps. Significantly good adaptation was achieved when the setting expansion was less than 0.2% (P < 0.05). The results indicated that the cavity form and the setting expansion of the refractory die material had significant effects on the adaptability of fired ceramic inlays.
This study investigated the effects of cavity divergence and setting expansion of refractory die material on the adaptability of Class II (MO and MOD) fired ceramic inlays. Standardized Class II (MO and MOD) cavities with two kinds of lateral wall divergence (10 and 20 degrees) were prepared in epoxy resin blocks. A refractory die was prepared from an impression of the epoxy resin cavity in which the setting expansion ranged from 0.04 to 1.14%. The results indicate that the setting expansion of the refractory die materials and the divergence of the lateral walls had significant effects on the adaptability of Class II (MO and MOD) fired ceramic inlays. The inlays fabricated on the refractory dies with small setting expansion showed small internal gaps in Class II (MO) cavities. Significantly good adaptation was achieved when the setting expansion was 0.32% or less (p < 0.05). The inlays fabricated on the refractory dies with large setting expansion showed small internal gaps in Class II (MOD) cavities. Significantly good adaptation was achieved when the setting expansion was 0.87% and greater (p < 0.05).
