A field study and continuous removal of fluoride in a packed column.

The synthetic water performance in the light of fluoride removal was studied and compared with the actual fluoride contaminated water of different selected water collection stations. An indegeneous activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The performance of the column for fluoride contaminated water was about 94% fluoride reduction at a pH value of 7.0 and the presence of total dissolved solids (T.D.S.). 2114 mg/L in subsoil water decreased the fluoride removal by 5%.

Air pollution--adverse effects of sulfur dioxide.

Among air pollutants, sulfur dioxide has been found to be very injurious. The present article deals with the adverse effects of sulfur dioxide gas on metals, metal alloys, buildings and plants, animals and human beings.

Industrial effluent B.O.D. Quanta and expected causes.

The biological oxygen demand (B.O.D.) is an important parameter for the measurement of organic pollutants in waste water. The present paper deals with the various causes which may be responsible for B.O.D. variations in waste water of different types of industrial effluents.

Effect of heavy metals on fish--a review.

Heavy metals are being utilized in a variety of ways in industries, agriculture, food processing and household in many forms. Metals are unique environmental and industrial pollutants in the sense that they are neither created nor destroyed by human beings but are only transported and transformed into various products. The present communication deals with the findings of various investigators on the effect of heavy metals on fresh water fish.

Antigenic relationship between downy and granular forms of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum.

One strain each of granular and downy varieties of Trichophyton mentagrophytes and two strains each of granular and floccose colonial types Trichophyton rubrum were used for preparation of antigens. The antigens were analyzed by double diffusion against homologous and heterologous antisera raised in rabbits. A total of 17 distinct antigens were recognized, seven of which were common to two dermatophytes. Granular and downy varieties of the Trichophyton species produced on additional line of nonidentity. Cross reactions failed to establish any relationship between similar morphologic forms of different dermatophytes. One isolate of T. rubrum, which was originally the floccose culture type but changed into the granular form after artificial infection, showed an antigenic relationship to the floccose culture.

Air pollution by odour--sources, identification and control.

Although odour pollution of air is not directly harmful to the health of man, it can affect mental attitudes and enjoyment of the environment. The present article reviews the sources of odours in gases and vapours, their effects, methods for their sensory and instrumental detection, their characterisation, threshold values and maximum limits. Industrial sources for offensive odours, such as meat, fish and other food processing plants, leather tanneries, sewage and domestic refuse processing plants, oil refineries, paper pulp, paint and plastic manufacturers, are outlined. Physical, chemical and biological methods for odour control are discussed and criteria for selection of a control method, depending upon available conditions and possibilities, are listed.
