Entanglement concentration using quantum statistics.

We propose an entanglement concentration scheme which uses only the effects of quantum statistics of indistinguishable particles. This establishes the fact that useful quantum information processing can be accomplished by quantum statistics alone. Because of the basis independence of statistical effects, our protocol requires less knowledge of the initial state than most entanglement concentration schemes. Moreover, no explicit controlled operation is required at any stage.

[Occurrence of TSH receptor antibodies and thyroid microsomal antibodies in Graves-Basedow disease].

Anti-TSH receptor antibody examination was performed in patients with Basedow-Graves' disease (141 patient: 34 before treatment, 49 during medicamentous therapy, 55 in stable remission and 3 with spontaneous hypothyroidism). The following findings were found: anti-TSH receptor antibodies were positive in 87% of untreated patients; in patients with medicamentous therapy they are in correlation with the metabolic status of the patients; only in 2% of patients in remission findings were high; all of the three patients with spontaneous hypothyroidism have had high titer. Findings of the thyroid microsomal antibodies don't have such regularity: the results were high in 67% of untreated patients; were in correlation with functional status during therapy; highly present in remission (62%) and have high titers in spontaneous hypothyroidism. The gathered results confirm opinions that anti-TSH receptor antibodies are highly etiopathogenetically significant in autoimmune hypothyroidism, but underline that the finding of thyroid microsomal antibodies is not clear enough.

Effect of calcium and 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D on the level of parathyroid hormone in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic renal insufficiency.

Thirty-two patients with chronic renal insufficiency on the heamodialys were studied. Serum calcium significantly correlated with mPTH/iPTH ratio (p < 0.01). The rise in concentrations of calcium during calcium infusion significantly increased mPTH/iPTH ratio (p < 0.05). Concentrations of iPTH declined for more than 50% in 65% patients during calcium infusion. Secretion of PTH was not suppressed in two patients. Serum PTH values were lower in group of patients who received 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (p < 0.05). Serum calcium values were similar in these investigated groups. Suppression of PTH secretion with calcium rose in group of patients who received 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D for two years. Suppression of PTH with calcium declined in two of three investigated patients who did not receive 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D for two years.

Tumor markers in detection of metastases--illustration of some practical aspects.

Authors are presenting 5 cases where positive findings of tumor markers indicated additional examinations for previously established negative metastases detection. In all the cases metastases were confirmed by additional diagnostic procedures. Authors are pointing out that this is a matter to consider in oncological practice.

[Methodologic characteristics of the radioreceptor test for insulin on erythrocytes].

Presented, are the results of the characteristics testing of the radioreceptor test for insulin on erythrocytes (precision, reproductiveness and linearity). Our own modification of the method was used. Testing was done on erythrocytes from the same bottle of preserved blood. The following results were received: the used method is precise enough (correlation coefficient from 3-15%), reproductive (correlation coefficient about 15%), and linear (linear correlation coefficient 0.83) in a wide range of erythrocytes. These characteristics allow the use of the applied radioreceptor test in practice.

Renovascular hypertension associated with bilateral aldosteronoma.

The authors present a 35-year-old male patient with renovascular hypertension caused by the stenosis of both renal arteries of the right kidney. Two years after the diagnosis of hypertension was made, an endarterectomy was performed but a successful correction of the upper stenotic artery was not achieved. During the next 2 years the hypertensive disease was uncontrollable with antihypertensive medications and gradually entered into a malignant phase. In addition to the atrophy of the right kidney, an adenoma of the left adrenal gland was revealed (19.75 g) which was operated on. Left adrenalectomy had only a transitory benefit on blood pressure level. Five months later an adenoma of the right adrenal gland was diagnosed and together with the ischaemic right kidney was operated on (right adrenalectomy and nephrectomy) which definitely cured the hypertension. The chronological sequence of events and the course of the disease in the patient point to the possibility that long-standing hyper-reninaemia, due to renal ischaemia, may cause the development of multiple bilateral adrenocortical adenomas and that secondary aldosteronism may transform into primary.

[Results of CA-125 tumor marker determination in patients with ovarian carcinoma].

The serum level of tumor marker CA-125 was determined by a specific immunoradiometric assay in 45 healthy persons (control group), in patients with benign ovarian tumors (13), patients with ovarian carcinoma in remission (15) and progression (28), patients with non-ovarian carcinoma (39), patients with benign peritoneal processes (6), and patients with malignant (3) or inflammatory (10) hepatic diseases. A follow-up study was carried out for a few months (4-11) in some patients after the primary therapy for ovarian cancer. The serum levels of CA-125 were always below the border value (30 U/ml) in healthy persons, in patients with benign ovarian tumors (without peritoneal affection), in patients with ovarian cancer in remission, patients with extraovarian cancers without metastases or with extraperitoneal metastases, and in patients with acute viral hepatitis. Patients with the progression of ovarian carcinoma and patients with peritoneal affection (malignant or benign) had elevated CA-125 values. The findings were in a good correlation with the clinical course in the follow-up study.
