Effects of father participation in child rearing: twenty-year follow-up.

Follow-up data were obtained on the young adult children of fathers of intact, white, middle-class families who had been closely involved in early child rearing. The extent to which their locus of control, expectations about gender roles in career and family contexts, and academic competence differed from those of peers reared in more traditional families was examined. Greater paternal involvement was found to contribute to a more internal locus of control, particularly in sons.

Predictors of nurturant parenting in teen mothers living in three generational families.

Direct and indirect effects of grandparents on maternal nurturance in teen mothers (TM) living in three-generational families were explored with path analytic techniques in a sample of 107 working-class families. Perceived support from the teen's mother, grandparents' nurturance toward the baby, and the presence of the grandfather as a father figure in the home were hypothesized as increasing TM nurturance. TM nurturance was found to be positively predicted by grandparent nurturance and negatively predicted by TM perceived support from her mother. The strongest predictor of TM nurturance was grandfather nurturance toward the baby.

Paternal involvement, maternal employment, and adolescents' academic achievement: an 11-year follow-up.

An 11-year follow-up study explored the effects of paternal involvement in child rearing and maternal employment in prior years on grades and educational expectations of a group of white, middle-class adolescents from intact families. Past maternal employment was found to be a more powerful predictor of children's academic performance and expectations than was amount of father involvement. Part-time maternal employment appeared to be optimal for children's academic expectations.

Differentiation antigens of human germ cell tumours: distribution of carbohydrate epitopes on glycolipids and glycoproteins analyzed using PDMP, an inhibitor of glycolipid synthesis.

Human and mouse embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells are characterized by their expression of cell surface carbohydrate antigens, present in both glycolipids and glycoproteins. These antigens disappear upon differentiation and are replaced with other antigens. We have used the inhibitor of glucosyl ceramide synthetase, 1-phenyl-2-decanoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol (PDMP), to study the distribution of carbohydrate epitopes between glycolipids and glycoproteins. PDMP inhibited the expression of glycolipid antigens, but not glycoprotein antigens assayed by immunofluorescence and thin layer chromatography. In the case of SSEA1, we observed expression on both glycolipids and glycoproteins. Resistance to PDMP inhibition suggests that glycoproteins carry the immunodominant form of SSEA1 on the cell surface of differentiated human EC cells and undifferentiated murine EC cells.

Ship's medicine chest on Yugoslav ship.

An insufficient medical care during sea voyage presents a great risk for the health and life seafarers at sea. Apart from an appropriate education of seamen, radio-medical services, and a good medical guide, ship's medicine chest is an important component of the primary health care on ships. The standardization and unification of these medicine chests, which all major maritime countries except Yugoslavia have already accepted, is essential. The authors present a proposal for the standardization of the list of drugs carried on Yugoslav ships.
