The national health demonstration projects.

The White Paper Towards a Healthier Scotland pledged 15 million Pounds to support four national health demonstration projects to lead the way in achieving sustained improvement in child health, young people's sexual health, coronary heart disease and cancer. The Starting Well project aims to demonstrate that child health in Glasgow can be improved by a programme of activities which both supports families and provides them with access to enhanced community-based resources. The Healthy Respect project aims to help young people in Lothian develop a positive attitude to their own sexuality and that of others, and a healthy respect for their partners, in order to reduce unplanned teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. The Have a Heart Paisley project is targeting coronary heart disease among the population of Scotland's largest town. The Cancer Challenge project is piloting a screening programme in the North East of Scotland for the detection of colorectal cancer. Though each project has specific objectives, appropriate to its own topic, all share underlying principles. The projects will act as test beds for action and a learning resource for the rest of Scotland.

Prevalence of rotavirus antibody among isolated South American Indian communities.

Rotavirus antibody was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 711 (54.7%) of 1,299 serum samples collected from Indians belonging to 13 relatively isolated communities in the Amazon region. The Parakanãs Novos Indians showed prevalences of immunity of 17.9% and 10.7% by ELISA and the indirect fluorescent antibody technique, respectively. The remaining tribes, with the exception of the Yanomamis, Tucanos, and Xicrins, had percentages of positivity greater than 50% by at least one technique; among both the Kubenkrankreins and the Oyampis, all individuals over 20 years of age possessed antibody. High percentages of rotavirus positivity were observed among the Apalais, ranging from 56.0% (age group 31-40 years) to 74.0% (age group 0-5 years). In the Kubenkrankreins, Maiogongs, and Tucanos, the prevalences of rotavirus antibody regularly increased with age. ELISA and the indirect fluorescent antibody technique agreed in 72.5% of the specimens, but the former test yielded more positives than the latter.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays based on polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies for rotavirus detection.

We describe two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for rotavirus antigen in feces, which were designed to be as sensitive and specific as possible, and easy to use anywhere. Both are indirect methods, using the antibody capture method, but the second assay utilizes a rotavirus group-specific monoclonal "detecting" antibody instead of the hyperimmune polyvalent guinea pig antisera used in the first assay. Both tests were found to be more sensitive than electron microscopy for detecting virus. To develop these tests, solid phase, antiserum production methods, treatment of the test antigen with EDTA, substrate, stability of reagents, and the need for confirmatory "blocking" tests were all examined. The first assay described is that used at present by the World Health Organization for their worldwide diarrheal disease control program.

Fracture toughness of acrylic denture base.

This paper describes the application of two fracture toughness tests, the compact tension (CT) and the double torsion (DT) to homogenous poly(methyl methacrylate) and two-phase acrylics. Materials were tested in air as processed and after saturation for one month in water. Most materials gave stable crack propagation with these tests, allowing accurate measurement of crack velocity. Modulus and un-notched fracture strength (sigma f) were determined at an identical strain rate in bending to that used in the fracture toughness tests, allowing accurate calculation of the flaw size (a) for a material and an assessment of how applicable Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics are to these materials.
