The effects of varying fins in Müller-Lyer and Holding illusions.

Five experiments were conducted to determine how distortion of spatial position induced by unidirectional Müller-Lyer fins varied as a function of angle and length of fins. Research employing Cornsweet's staircase method yielded ambiguous results, but psychophysical methods of magnitude estimation, paired comparisons, and production showed conclusively that distortions of position are affected by angle and length of fins in a manner similar to that found in distortions of length. It was concluded that similar strategies are employed in processing attributes of length and position and that a theory based on averaging of attributes within an attentional field describes the performance of real observers.

A QA monitor for the QA department.

Utilizing the User Satisfaction and Departmental Performance Monitor provides information to health care managers on the assistance available from the QA professional. Obtaining responses to the approach the QA professional uses in teaching and assisting with QA activity changes should promote a behavior change in the consultant. The quality assurance professional provides a service and should periodically monitor how that service is used and what can be done to improve it. Trending the responses of the health care managers provides the quality assurance department with direction for future program planning.

A quality assurance, cost avoidance, evaluation model.

The quality assurance and cost avoidance evaluation model has six processes that help management and staff approach quality and cost through a systematic and objective method. Quality of service and care can be provided that need not bankrupt the health care system or the client. What is needed is the continual review of our client's needs and our practices. We cannot lose sight of the fact that there is always another way to accomplish optimal health care.
