Focusable Doppler ultrasound in mapping dorsal hand flaps.

The dorsal arterial anatomy of 50 normal hands was mapped using high frequency pulsed wave Doppler ultrasound. The findings correlated with previous anatomical studies regarding the variability in the incidence of the arteries. Eight clinical cases were studied preoperatively, seven of whom underwent surgery involving local flaps. Intraoperatively the presence of the mapped vessels was confirmed in each case. This investigation defines the role of high frequency pulsed wave Doppler ultrasound in the mapping of dorsal hand flaps.

Adult

Silicone gel in the treatment of keloid scars.

Silicone gel is effective in the treatment of keloid scars. Eighteen patients with 22 scars were treated with gel and their progress reviewed at 6 months. Improvements in texture, colour and height of the lesions were noted.

Adolescent

With or without? A cooling study.

The cooling characteristics of a variety of hot-water receptacles have been tested to provide a guide to the temperatures involved in a scald.

Nasal symmetry: a 10-year comparison between the Pigott and McComb nasal correction.

The objective assessment of the symmetry of the cleft lip nose has not been properly evaluated. A simple technique using enlarged photographs and area assessment is described. Two different techniques were assessed, the Pigott "alar leapfrog" technique and the McComb alar lift technique. The children were assessed at 10 years of age. The results show no differences in the linear measurements or when the symmetry is assessed in the frontal view. In the worm's eye view, the Pigott correction was shown to produce a more asymmetric nose when compared with the McComb technique. Both corrections produce significant asymmetry when compared with a control group.
