Double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the pain-relieving effects of the implantation of gold beads into dogs with hip dysplasia.

Seventy-eight dogs with pain due to hip dysplasia were studied in a controlled, double-blind clinical trial to evaluate gold bead implantation as a pain-relieving treatment. The dogs were randomly assigned to two groups, 36 in the gold implantation group and 42 in the placebo group. Both groups were treated equally regarding anaesthesia, hair clipping and penetration of the skin with the same type of needle. The gold implantation group had small pieces of 24 carat gold inserted through needles at five different acupuncture points and the placebo group had the skin penetrated at five non-acupuncture points so as to avoid any possible effect of stimulating the acupuncture points. A certified veterinary acupuncturist marked the points, and two surgeons performed the implantations according to a randomisation code made in advance. After 14 days, three months and six months, the owners assessed the overall effect of the treatments by answering a questionnaire, and the same veterinarian examined each dog and evaluated its degree of lameness by examining videotaped footage of it walking and trotting. The treatment was blinded for both the owners and the veterinarian. There were significantly greater improvements in mobility and greater reductions in the signs of pain in the dogs treated with gold implantation than in the placebo group. The veterinarian's and the owners' assessments corresponded well.

Multiresistant Shigella species from African AIDS patients: antibacterial resistance patterns and application of the E-test for determination of minimum inhibitory concentration.

The antibacterial resistance pattern and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 25 Shigella flexneri, 5 S. boydii, 8 S. sonnei, and 3 strains of S. dysenteriae type 2 isolated from Kenyan prostitutes with bacillary dysentery and AIDS were determined, and the applicability of the E-test for MIC determination evaluated. All strains were resistant to > or = 3 of 9 different antibacterial agents tested. All strains were resistant to tetracycline and erythromycin, 95% to trimethoprim/sulfonamide, 93% to streptomycin, 54% to ampicillin, 39% to chloramphenicol, 2% to nalidixic acid and none to gentamicin and ciprofloxacin. Six different resistance patterns were observed. The most common pattern was resistance to tetracycline, erythromycin, trimethoprim/sulfa and streptomycin (39%). The E-test was shown to be well-suited for susceptibility testing of multiresistant Shigella spp.; the reproducibility was excellent and the correlation with the microtiter dilution method and the disk diffusion method were 98% in both instances. The MIC measured with E-test and the microdilution method were within +/- 1 dilution step for 94.4% of the combinations tested.

Changes in pupillary dynamics in young men during prolonged severe exercise.

Infrared pupillography has been performed on 9 male cadets taking part in a combat course lasting for 5 days. The combat course involved lack of sleep, strong physical exercise and caloric deficit. During the course pupillary size was determined after rapid adaptation to darkness and the rate of concentration and the rate of dilatation after stimulation of the opposite eye with light was determined. Dilatation time increased by 50% towards the end of the course and pupillary size before light stimulation was reduced by 14%. On day 3 and 5, but not on day 1, small amplitude pupillary oscillations were observed. The speed of contraction was, however, unchanged.
