HIV-1 isolation was attempted on 72 individuals, including persons with known HIV infection and five without proven HIV infection but with indeterminate Western blot patterns, as well as on low-risk HIV seronegative persons. The ability to detect HIV-1 from culture supernatant by p24 antigen capture assay was evaluated by segregating patients by absolute CD4+ cell counts, clinical stage of disease, p24 antigenemia and zidovudine use. The likelihood of a p24 positive HIV culture was highest among patients with CD4+ T-cell counts below 200/ul and patients with advanced clinical disease. Use of zidovudine did not affect the rate of HIV positivity in cultures.
Given the increase of the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCD) and the possibility to avoid it, it is urgent to implement or strengthen NCD preventive programs in Latin America. However, many myths hinder the implementation of NCD programs. Myths on NCD include: a) NCD are degenerative and incurable; b) they are diseases of the elderly; c) they are diseases of the rich. Like wise there are myths about NCD preventive programs are: a) difficult to implement, b) expensive, and c) ineffective. We present data that demonstrate how these myths are untrue and discuss the challenges to find a balanced health policy that emphasizes the importance of NCD without overlooking other diseases.

We describe the use of the Berlin Heart biventricular mechanical assistance device, as a bridge to transplant in a two-years old child suffering from end stage dilated cardiomiopathy. Ventricular support lasted for 3,5 months and led to successful transplantation. We describe the clinical case, the protocols used as well as present indications, techniques and problems related to the use of mechanical heart support in children.
To a conventional silver amalgam alloy was added 1% of stanous fluoride, to prove in vitro, if it presents any antibacteria actions against S. mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Thirteen Petri plate were seeded with S. mutans and 12 Petri plate with Lactobacillus, in both cases, was disposited fluoride containing amalgam and conventional amalgam. The average of inhibition signs in the Petri plates with S. mutans was 1.7 mm in the Petri plates with Lactobacillus the average was 2.4 mm. Is demonstrated that the fluoride containing amalgam has in vitro antibacteria action in comparison with conventional amalgam, that has none.
