[Ultrastructure of the ocular ciliary epithelium of the common frog].

The ultrastructure of the adult frog ciliary epithelium cells has definite regional differences. Cells of ciliary epithelium folds near the iris display morphological features characterizing its barrier and secretory functions which lead to the formation of aqueous humor. These are junctional complexes with tight junctions (zonula occludents) in the apical parts of contacting sides of cells of the inner leaf: a great quantity of mitochondria, ribosomes and various vesicles, well developed endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm, much folded basal surface, gap junctions between cells of external and internal leaflets. In the mammalian inner epithelial layer different cell junctions are known to be arranged in a fixed spatial fashion. Unlike, in the frog's epithelium both zonula adherent and desmosomes may be found in any sequence. Tight junctions are formed during metamorphosis, on the place of focal junctions, whereas gap junctions, referred to earlier as "extended", start functioning between cells just on the very early stages of eye morphogenesis (Dabagyan et al., 1979). The epithelium of the posterior part of the ciliary fold and pars plana of the ciliary body have, in addition, the number of morphological sign indicating the cell involvement in the accomodational function of any eye (i. e. a majority of desmosomes binding all cells together and of zonulae adherentes, well developed intracellular skeleton of tonofilament bundles). These features are characteristic of the whole distal part of ciliary epithelium rather than of the place of attachment of zonula fiber only.

[Electron microscopic study of the intercellular junctions during the ciliary epithelial differentiation of the eye of the common frog].

Intercellular junctions in the eye ciliary epithelium were studied in Rana temporaria by means of transmission electron microscopy beginning from the stage of appearance of the light sensitivity in the larval eye and until the completion of metamorphosis. In the ciliary epithelium inner layer the apical parts of adjacent cells are tied by contacts forming the junction complex already at a very early developmental stage. The most apical position in this complex is occupied by the focal junction which appears to be an early stage of zonula occludens; this complex includes also zonula adherens and macula adherens which may follow in any succession focal junction or zonula occludens. No definite order was found in the localization of cell contacts between the outer and inner layers of ciliary epithelium, as well as between the side surfaces of the cells within each layer. Contacts were found everywhere termed as "lengthy" which may be considered as gap junctions. Regional differences were found in the ultrastructure of the ciliary epithelium cells with respect to unequal distribution of functional loads.

[Differentiation of the retina and pigment epithelium in the ontogeny of the common frog. 1. The retina].

Changes in the ultrastructure of the differentiating retinal cells were studied by means of electron microscopy in Rana temporaria at successive developmental stages. Common features of the onset of differentiation of the retinal cells have been shown: appearance of the granular endoplasmic reticulum elements, of the polysomes, beginning of utilization of the yolk and lipids, elimination of ovarial melanosomes. Later during the differentiation of retinal neurons the protein synthesizing machinery and Golgi complex of these cells develop markedly, the number of mitochondria increases. The differentiation of retina begins from the Müllerian cells (stage 28) which determine the direction of growth of the neuron processes. They are followed by the ganglion cells and photoreceptors (stage 29). The signs of differentiation of the inner nuclear layer neurons become apparent later, in the amacrine and horizontal cells at the same time and in the bipolars later. The main features of neuronal organization of the retina which determine the structural basis of its function of light perception are formed by stage 40.

[Differentiation of the retina and pigment epithelium in the ontogeny of the common frog. 2. Pigment epithelium].

Changes in the differentiating pigment epithelium cells have been studied in Rana temporaria by transmission electron microscopy. Ultrastructural features of the pigment epithelium functions at successive developmental stages have been established: the phagocytic function appears the first (judging by utilization of embryonic pigment from the primary eye cavity), it is followed by the transport and barrier functions (as the secondary eye cavity and vascular envelope develop), while phagocytosis related to the process of renovation of the external segments of photoreceptors and the function of screening appear later.
