[Combined action of doxycycline and mytilan on the immune response to tularemia antigen].

Combined action of doxycycline and mytilan, a natural polysaccharide, on the primary immune response to the antigen of the tularemia vaccinal strain in CBA mice was studied. The polysaccharide was used to compensate the immunosuppressive effect of doxycycline high doses on the humoral immune response. The maximum stimulation of the antibody titers as compared to the controls (more than 250 per cent) was observed when mytilan was administered simultaneously with or prophylactically 3 days prior to the antibiotic in doses of 2.5 and 25 mg/kg. The use of mytilan in combination with doxycycline high doses made it possible to compensate the antibiotic-induced decrease of DTH and even to stimulate it as compared to the controls. The highest levels of DTH (150 per cent against the control) were observed when mytilan was administered prophylactically in doses of 2.5 and 11.25 mg/kg 3 days prior to immunization. Mytilan had the highest stimulating effect on antibody production. The combined use of doxycycline and mytilan was characterized by significant stimulation of antibody production and DTH when the dose/time regimens were rational.

[Immunoactive peptide obtained from the optical ganglia of squid].

The data on the effect of a peptide from the squid optic ganglia named gangliin on some parameters of animal natural resistance are presented. It was shown that the prophylactic use of the peptide in mice 24 hours before their contamination with the lethal dose of E. coli protected 40 to 60 per cent of the animals from death. Gangliin accelerated elimination of E. coli from the host and increased the absorptive and digestive activity of the macrophages and polymorphonuclear leukocytes. With the use of gangliin it was possible to correct the phagocytosis defects in infectious processes having the phagocytic protection mechanism. Moreover, gangliin was supposed to be efficient in control of long-term persistence of various microbes in the cells of the system of mononuclear phagocytes.

[Effect of mytilan, a polysaccharide from Crenomytilus grayanus, on the functional activity of peritoneal macrophages].

The studies showed that mytilan, a polysaccharide from Crenomytilus grayanus had a marked activating effect on macrophages evident from respective morphological changes and increased metabolic and functional activity of the macrophages. Exposure to mytilan resulted in an increase in the number of the macrophages and their size (optic microscopy), changes in their surface (scanning microscopy) and ultrastructural reconstruction of the cells (light microscopy). It was shown that subcutaneous and intraperitoneal administration of mytilan defined a decrease in the activity of 5'-nucleotidase in the macrophages of the peritoneal exudate from ++noninbred mice and mice CBA. Moreover, under the influence of mytilan the macrophage phagocytic activity against E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and P. vulgaris increased in vivo and in vitro.

[Morphofunctional transformations of the blood vessels in the transplantation of syngeneic normal tissue and of a tumor].

In 360 Fisher rats dynamics of changes in blood vessels, the microcirculatory bed vessels included, have been investigated. An original model of the experiment at implantation of syngenic tissues of the fetus normal intestine and tumorous adenocarcinoma of the small intestine has been used. Specific changes of the blood vessels have been revealed around and in the capsule of the implant, depending on their morphological reorganization. The blood vessels changes can serve as a prognostic sign of possible alterations in the implant structure.

[Combined use of mytilan and gentamycin in experimental infections ].

It was shown that mytilan, a polysaccharide isolated from the mantle of Crenomytilus grayanus stimulated the host nonspecific resistance to infections. This was evident from the survival rate of the animals infected with lethal doses of E. coli and S. aureus. In addition, the combined use of gentamicin and mytilan in treatment of the infections caused by the above organisms enabled to increase the antibiotic therapy efficacy with using lower doses of both the antibiotic and the polysaccharide.

[Morphofunctional characteristics of the conjunctival microcirculation of students of different regions of the world].

By means of vital microscopy, the conjunctival microcirculation has been estimated in students from various regions of the world depending on duration of the time of their life in the USSR. Adaptive rearrangements of the conjunctival microcirculation of the eye ball have been revealed in various time of adaptation. Integral estimation of the conjunctival microcirculation has demonstrated that at initial phase of adaptation synchronization in the work of separate links of the microcirculatory bed is observed. These changes can be interpreted as strain of the compensatory mechanisms. In two years of study, certain stabilization of the microcirculation system activity is observed in the foreign students; this can be considered as the phase of stable adaptation. In the students arrived from hot regions of the world, pigmentation in the eye ball conjunctiva has been revealed. By means of the correlative analysis it has been demonstrated that the pigmentation influences the most labile parts of the microcirculatory bed-capillaries and venules. Pigmentation is usually regarded as a pathological sign peculiar for some diseases. Our investigations have demonstrated that pigmentation should be interpreted carefully and the place of residence of the students investigated should be taken into account, since pigmentation can be the result of elevated solar radiation, specific for hot regions of the Earth.

[Morphofunctional features of the microcirculatory bed of the skin in students from different climatogeographic zones].

By means of the vital microscopy method length, diameter, stipulated area of the longitudinal section have been studied in the nail torus capillaries of students from different regions of the world depending on the climatogeographic zones. The value of the structural parameters in the skin capillaries, which characterize their heat exchange surface, directly, depends on temperature factors of the environment. There is an increase of the heat exchange surface in the capillaris of the person-inhabitants beginning from the moderate towards the subtropical, tropical and subequatorial zone. The exception make the students from the equatorial zone: the structure parameters of their capillaries are less than in the persons from the subequatorial and even from the tropical zones. This is connected with the fact that the equatorial zone is characterized with some extermal amount of heat and moisture.

[Action of bioglycans from marine invertebrates on macrophage functioning].

The data on the absorption and bactericidal function of macrophages are presented. It was shown in vivo that bioglycans 42 and 106 had a stimulating action on phagocytosis of Y. pseudotuberculosis and S. typhimurium capable of persisting in macrophages for prolonged periods. Addition of the bioglycans to the cultures of the macrophages from intact animals increased the absorption activity of the macrophages and somewhat potentiated their bactericidal activity. Under the action of the bioglycans the level and rate of the carbon clearance in the blood flow increased. The results of the study are promising for adequate control of infections caused by intracellularly located pathogens.

[Effect of hydroxyprogesterone caproate on immunological skin tests and on the T-lymphocytes in cancer of the corpus uteri].

Under study was the effect of oxyprogesterone-capronate (500 mg daily, total dosage of 10 g) on delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction (DCHR) to tuberculin and candidine as well as the level of T-lymphocytes and cortisol in the peripheral blood in 34 patients with primary cancer of the corpus uteri. Prior to the treatment there was a considerable negative correlation between metabolic and immunological indices. Under OPC exposure DCHR enhanced in 62% of observations. In 7 of 12 patients the level of T-lymphocytes was increased and blood cortiol level decreased in 6 of 11 patients. 58 per cent of the observations showed a parallelism between the effect of OPC on the skin tests and the tumor histostructure, and in 8 of 12 patients on the level of T-lymphocytes and the tumor histostructure.
