Radioactive contamination of the Techa River, the Urals.

The Techa River in the Urals was contaminated with high-level radioactive waste from the MAJAK nuclear installation around 1950. The total discharge to the river amounted to 100 PBq with 90Sr and 137Cs contributing approximately 10 PBq each. This study has shown that the river presently contains approximately 0.3 TBq 90Sr, > 6 TBq 137Cs, and approximately 8 GBq 239,240Pu. The estimates were made for the part of the river starting 50 km from the point of discharge and ending 240 km downstream at the confluence with the Iset River. Radioactivity was measured only in the upper 0.10-m sediments layer. The external dose rates from the contamination range from 0.1-30 microGy h-1. The activity concentrations decrease exponentially or by power functions with distance.

Studies on the carbodiimide-mediated model couplings of Z-Pro-Leu-OH with benzoaza-15-crown-5.

A series of model DCC-mediated couplings of Z-Pro-D-Leu-OH with 2,3-benzo-10-aza-1,4,7,13-tetraoxacyclopentadeca-2-ene were studied by high-performance liquid chromatography. It was found that racemization during preparation of N-(Z-Pro-Leu-)benzoaza-15-crown-5 is promoted by HOBT, an additive usually reducing this process.

[Subfascial ligation of the communicating crural veins in the comprehensive surgical treatment of varicose veins of the lower extremities in light of the late results].

The authors show that subfascial ligation of the communicating veins in the operation of choice in complex surgery of the varicose disease of the veins in decompensated stages. It is supported by absence of relapses in the near and late results of 300 cases.

[Surgical treatment of occlusive lesions of the aorta and major arteries].

Operations were performed on 262 patients with occlusive lesions of the abdominal aorta and major arteries. In 41 patients a lateral venous autograft was applied after endarterectomy, in 42 an autovenous shunt was created after open endarterectomy, 26 patients underwent eversion endarterectomy. Prosthetic alloplasty of the aorta and major arteries was conducted on 63 patients and an allograft shunt was formed in 41. Lumbar sympathectomy was carried out on all patients as a rule after reconstructive-restorative operations. Nineteen patients died after the operation. Complications developed in the postoperative period in 41 patients. Marked improvement or the disappearance of the symptoms of the disease was noted in the immediate postoperative period in 231 patients (95%).
