A case with dextrocardia, ventricular septal defect, persistent left superior vena cava and drainage of the great cardiac vein into the left internal thoracic vein.

A 17-month-old female patient was operated on for ventricular septal defect and pulmonary stenosis. During the operation several cardiac anomalies were observed; these were dextrocardia, ventricular septal defect, persistent left superior vena cava, drainage of the great cardiac vein into the left internal thoracic vein and a pericardial pouch. These anomalies have not previously been reported together.

High origin and unusual suprarenal branch of a testicular artery.

In a 42 year-old male cadaver, the left testicular artery was found to originate from the anterior surface of the abdominal aorta at the level of origin of the left renal artery. It ran parallel and just inferior to the left renal artery and gave off a branch which supplied the left suprarenal gland. The course, relations and branching of this suprarenal branch differed from the very rare cases found in the literature. Awareness of the possible existence of such variations of the testicular arteries is of great importance during surgical procedures.

Anomalous veins of the retroperitoneum: clinical considerations.

A case of complex anomalies (variations) of the veins of the retroperitoneum in a 57 year old male cadaver is presented. The anomaly involved a double inferior vena cava, with the left suprarenal v. draining into the left vena cava and the right testicular v. drained into the right renal v.. There was also no left common iliac v., with the left external iliac v. draining into the left vena cava and the left internal iliac v. into the right common iliac v.. Although duplication of the inferior vena cava has previously been reported the present case is interesting because of the complexity of the associated anomalies.

Morphological characteristics of styloid process evaluated by computerized axial tomography.

Morphological characteristics of styloid process and ossified stylohyoid ligament and their overall relationships to age and sex were studied by using computerized axial tomography images. The styloid process and ossified stylohyoid ligaments were classified into seven groups according to their shapes and lengths. The styloid process of a length of 25-40 mm, was the most frequently encountered. The elongated styloid process was mostly seen in males. There was no overall correlation between the types of SP and sex. The progressive increase in length with age was not seen in our study.

Localization of the central sulcus and adjacent sulci in human: a study by MRI.

Variations in localization of the central sulcus and the sulci around the central sulcus namely the superior frontal sulcus, precentral sulcus, postcentral sulcus, marginal ramus of cingulate sulcus were studied in vertex sections retrospectively by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method in 3580 cases. Out of total number of cases, 1000 who did not show any macroscopic intracranial pathology were carefully selected for research. Additionally, 0-1 age group was excluded from the study because the sulci develop in first year of postnatal life, excluding the possibility of considering these as anatomical variations. Thus, the total number of cases is decreased to 990. 16 variations related to localization of the superior frontal sulcus, precentral sulcus, central sulcus, postcentral sulcus and the marginal ramus of the cingulate sulcus were identified. The asymmetries of the sulci, the most variable sulci and the distribution of the variations according to sex were statistically analysed.

An anomalous ascending cervical artery.

During gross anatomy dissection of the neck region, an anatomical variation of the ascending cervical artery was detected. Normally this artery is a branch of the inferior thyroid artery, which is a branch of the thyrocervical trunk. In our case, we found that the ascending cervical artery emerged from the superficial cervical artery, nearly 1 cm. lateral to the origin of this artery from the thyrocervical trunk.

New technique to enlarge the aortic annulus.

A new technique is described to enlarge the aortic annulus and the supraaortic area by using the anterior mitral leaflet. This technique is used when it is necessary to replace both the aortic and mitral valves.

An accessory flexor digitorum longus muscle.

An accessory flexor digitorum longus muscle (M. flexor digitorum longus accessorius) in a 60-year-old male cadaver was encountered during routine dissections in our laboratory. The muscle originated from the deep transverse fascia of the leg, covering flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus, and tibialis posterior muscles, and additionally from some fibres of these muscles. After the tendon of the muscle passed behind the medial malleolus, it inserted into the tendon of the flexor digitorum longus muscle where the latter separated into four digital tendons.
