Low-temperature polyol synthesis of AuCuSn2 and AuNiSn2: using solution chemistry to access ternary intermetallic compounds as nanocrystals.

Ternary intermetallic compounds, which possess a wide variety of important properties with both academic and technological relevance, are typically synthesized using traditional high-temperature methods. Here, we demonstrate that the polyol method, which is used extensively to synthesize nanocrystals and nanocrystalline powders of metals and simple binary compounds, serves as an effective low-temperature exploratory medium for synthesizing new ordered ternary intermetallics as nanocrystals. Accordingly, we describe the synthesis and structural characterization of AuCuSn2 and AuNiSn2, which adopt an ordered NiAs-type superstructure that is not observed using equilibrium synthetic methods. AuCuSn2 forms in solution of 120 degrees C as well-formed nanocrystals, and the ordered phase is stable up to 450 degrees C. AuNiSn2 behaves similarly to AuCuSn2.

Combinatorial screening employing nylon loops and micro-X-ray powder diffraction.

A combinatorial screening method is described that employs nylon loops and micro-X-ray powder diffraction. The nylon loops are used to position the sample in a three-circle X-ray diffractometer in such a way as to allow for Gandolfi-like scans. These scans maximize mechanical tumbling of the sample, which in turn results in higher quality data. The diffractometer utilizes a pinhole source and two-dimensional area detection for rapid data collection. The method can be readily automated by employing single-crystal screening procedures. The combinatorial analysis of the three known polymorphs of D-mannitol is discussed and a simple procedure to produce all three polymorphs from the same starting solutions is presented.

Optical and electrical properties of the wide gap, n-type semiconductors: ZnBi2O6 and MgBi2O6.

Characterization of polycrystalline samples of the trirutile oxides ZnBi2O6 and MgBi2O6 reveals temperature independent conductivity (0.4 and 0.01 S cm(-1)), a negative Seebeck coefficient (-0.035 and -0.025 mV K(-1)), and an optical band gap that falls at the low energy end of visible region (1.7 and 1.8 eV), this combination of attributes, indicating that these compounds are degenerate n-type semiconductors, has not previously been observed in a Bi(5+) oxide.

Thermally induced A'-A site exchange in novel layered perovskites Ag2[Ca1.5M3O10] (M = Nb, Ta).

We have synthesized and characterized new layered perovskites Ag2[A1.5M3O10] (A = Ca, M = Nb, Ta), from their lithium analogues, by soft-chemical ion exchange. These oxides show topotactic irreversible thermally induced A'-A site exchange, resulting in Ag1.1Ca0.9[Ca0.6Ag0.9M3O10], conferred from our high-temperature X-ray and ionic conductivity studies. The latter phases are the first compounds where Ag+ ions reside in both A' and A sites in layered perovskites. The absence of similar phase transition for A = Sr suggests that these transitions strongly depend on the size, charge, and the coordination preference of A' and A cations. This result provides a new synthetic tool for modifying the occupation of the 12-coordinate A site of layered perovskites using soft chemical routes.
