Highly active copper-based catalyst for atom transfer radical polymerization.

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) generally requires a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.1 to 1 and catalyst/monomer molar ratio of 0.001 to 0.01 (i.e., catalyst concentration: 1000-10,000 ppm versus monomer). Herein, we report a new copper-based complex CuBr/N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) as a versatile and highly active catalyst for acrylic, methacrylic, and styrenic monomers. The catalyst mediated ATRP at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.005 and produced polymers with well-controlled molecular weights and low polydispersities. ATRP occurred even at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio as low as 0.001 with copper concentration in the produced polymers as low as 6-8 ppm (catalyst/monomer molar ratio = 10(-5)). The catalyst structures were studied by X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The activator CuIBr/TPEN existed in solution as binuclear and mononuclear complexes in equilibrium but as a binuclear complex in its single crystals. The deactivator CuIIBr2/TPEN complex was mononuclear. High stability and appropriate KATRP (ATRP equilibrium constant) were found crucial for the catalyst working under high dilution or in coordinating solvents/monomers. This provides guidance for further design of highly active ATRP catalysts.

Synthesis of diazeniumdiolates from the reactions of nitric oxide with enolates.

[reaction: see text] Reactions of nitric oxide with enolates derived from aliphatic methyl ketones containing alpha-methylene or alpha-methine groups and with enolates derived from alpha,alpha'-dimethylene or alpha,alpha'-dimethine ketones yield mono- or bis(diazeniumdiolate) products. Diazeniumdiolation occurs in the following order: alpha-methine > alpha-methylene > alpha-methyl. The amount of the base used alters the extent of diazeniumdiolation and the course of the reaction. Mono- and bis(diazeniumdiolate)-substituted methyl ketones are cleaved in the presence of excess base before and after the subsequent diazeniumdiolation of the alpha-methyl group. Similar to the trihalogenated methyl groups in the base-assisted halogenation reactions of methyl ketones, the bis(diazeniumdiolate)-substituted alpha-methylene and alpha-methyl groups act as leaving groups in the presence of excess base. The reaction of nitric oxide with a (approximately 20:80, cis/trans) mixture of 2,6-cyclohexananone yields the cis and trans isomers of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanone-2,6-bis(diazeniumdiolate) in 12.9% and 57.6% yield. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data determined for potassium cis-2,6-dimethylcyclohexanone-2,6-bis(diazeniumdiolate), cis-14b, reveal that the N(2)O(2-) substituent is planar with considerable delocalization of a double bond over the anionic four-atom group. Except for one of the diazeniumdiolate products, namely, potassium propanoate 2,2-bis(diazeniumdiolate), 8b, all are stable in neutral and basic aqueous media. Compound 8b slowly decomposes in neutral aqueous solution releasing nitrous oxide and nitric oxide gases but is stable in basic aqueous media. Differential scanning calorimetry data measured for the diazeniumdiolate products indicate that they decompose exothermally with most of them undergoing explosive decomposition at moderately high temperatures (181-274 degrees C).

Surfactant quaternary ammonium hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borates.

Quaternary ammonium surfactants with the hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate anion as an unusual counterion were prepared and characterized. Dodecyl- (1a), tetradecyl- (1b), and hexadecyltrimethylammonium hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate (1c), as well as didodecyldimethylammonium hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate (2), were prepared by metathesis reactions with the corresponding quaternary ammonium bromides and potassium hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate (4). Although the surfactants have limited stabilities in water at 23 degrees C, they were characterized by measurement of their Krafft temperatures and critical aggregation concentrations. (1)H NMR spectroscopy suggested that the single-chain surfactants 1 form small aggregates in water and revealed an association of the quaternary ammonium and hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate ions above their critical aggregation concentrations. Cryo-etch high-resolution scanning electron microscopy indicated that 1a and 1b most likely form segregation patterns upon plunge-freezing and cryo-etching of their aqueous solutions, and a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of 1a was performed.

Synthesis and Structural Investigations of [Mn(3)O(4)(phen)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(4).2.5H(2)O: A Water-Bound Complex Obtained by Cerium(IV) Oxidation.

The trinuclear manganese complex [Mn(3)O(4)(phen)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(4).2.5H(2)O, 1 (where, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), has been synthesized by the Ce(IV) oxidation of a concentrated solution of manganese(II) acetate and phen in 1.6 N nitric acid. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group P&onemacr; with a = 10.700(2) Å, b = 12.643(3) Å, c = 20.509(4) Å, alpha = 78.37(3) degrees, beta = 83.12(3) degrees, gamma = 82.50(3) degrees, and Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least-squares techniques to the conventional R (R(w)) factors of 0.055 (0.076) based on 4609 unique reflections with F(o) >/= 6.0sigma(F(o)). The structure of the cation consists of an oxo-bridged Mn(3)O(4)(4+) core, with the geometry of the manganese atoms being octahedral. The coordination polyhedron of one of the manganese atoms (Mn(1)) consists of two &mgr; oxo ligands and two pairs of nitrogen atoms of two phen moieties, whereas that of each of the remaining two manganese atoms consists of three &mgr;-oxo ligands, two nitrogen atoms of a phen moiety, and the oxygen atom of a water molecule. The complex represents the second example for water coordination to manganese(IV) centers in complexes with a Mn(3)O(4)(4+) core. Optical spectra in ligand buffer (pH 4.5) reveal complete conversion of the complex into a Mn(III)Mn(IV) species. The observed room-temperature (298 K) magnetic moment of 3.75 &mgr;(B) indicates the presence of strong antiferromagnetic coupling in the complex.
