Aspect ratio dependence on surface enhanced Raman scattering using silver and gold nanorod substrates.

Silver and gold nanorods with aspect ratios from 1 to 16 have been used as substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in colloidal solution. The nanorod aspect ratio is varied to give different degrees of overlap between the nanorod longitudinal plasmon band and excitation source in order to determine its effect on overall surface enhancement. Results suggest that enhancement factors are a factor of 10-10(2) greater for substrates that have plasmon band overlap with the excitation source than for substrates whose plasmon bands do not.

Gram-scale synthesis of soluble, near-monodisperse gold nanorods and other anisotropic nanoparticles.

An aqueous surfactant-based colloidal chemical method is reported for the synthesis of anisotropic noble-metal nanoparticles on the milligram to multigram scale. Fine control of the nucleation-growth kinetics and rodlike micelle-induced breaking of symmetry at the early stage of particle growth are responsible for high-quality anisotropic nanoparticles. Near-monodisperse gold and silver nanorods, spheroids, nanowires, platelets, or cubes of 4-50 nm dimension and controllable aspect ratio can be prepared. The method may also be extended to semiconductor systems.

Single-phase and gram-scale routes toward nearly monodisperse Au and other noble metal nanocrystals.

Single-phase approaches are introduced for the synthesis of nearly monodisperse Au and other noble metal nanocrystals. The new approaches possess all the advantages of the popular Brust method. With weak ligands or surfactants for the metal ions, the control of the size and size distribution of the nanocrystals in synthesis in the size range between 1 and 15 nm was achieved via maintaining balanced nucleation and growth by tuning the activities of the metal precursors and reducing reagents. Because only weak ligands are employed in the new synthetic schemes, surface modification and functionalization of the resulting nanocrystals can be readily carried out.
