Electromagnetic analysis of coupling and guiding phenomena in elliptical cross-section parallel waveguides with rotated symmetry planes.

Rigorous electromagnetic analysis methods, based on the Green's function method along with the method of moments, are utilized to analyze coupling, guiding, and polarization phenomena in elliptic cross-section parallel waveguides. The analysis is carried out for the general case of closely spaced elliptic fibers of arbitrary orientation of the ellipses' axes. Numerical results are presented for the cases of 0 degrees and 45 degrees angles between axes, as well as for the single elliptical fiber and closely spaced circular dielectric waveguides. The possibility of using this type of coupling structure in quantum signal processing applications is examined.

Transmission medium and full fiber-optic setup for quantum key distribution applications.

A fiber-optic-based coupled waveguide transmission medium is proposed to distribute secret keys in a single-photon polarization-based quantum cryptography setup. Polarization maintenance properties and coupling phenomena of the transmission medium are exploited to achieve accuracy and security of the transferred key. Elliptic fibers and fiber couplers are used to prepare the transmitted photons at the sender as well as analyze them at the receiver. The uniqueness of the setup stands on the exclusive use of fiber-optic components, enabling its construction on a single fiber line.

A spatiotemporal, patient individualized simulation model of solid tumor response to chemotherapy in vivo: the paradigm of glioblastoma multiforme treated by temozolomide.

A novel four-dimensional, patient-specific Monte Carlo simulation model of solid tumor response to chemotherapeutic treatment in vivo is presented. The special case of glioblastoma multiforme treated by temozolomide is addressed as a simulation paradigm. Nevertheless, a considerable number of the involved algorithms are generally applicable. The model is based on the patient's imaging, histopathologic and genetic data. For a given drug administration schedule lying within acceptable toxicity boundaries, the concentration of the prodrug and its metabolites within the tumor is calculated as a function of time based on the drug pharamacokinetics. A discretization mesh is superimposed upon the anatomical region of interest and within each geometrical cell of the mesh the most prominent biological "laws" (cell cycling, necrosis, apoptosis, mechanical restictions, etc.) are applied. The biological cell fates are predicted based on the drug pharmacodynamics. The outcome of the simulation is a prediction of the spatiotemporal activity of the entire tumor and is virtual reality visualized. A good qualitative agreement of the model's predictions with clinical experience supports the applicability of the approach. The proposed model primarily aims at providing a platform for performing patient individualized in silico experiments as a means of chemotherapeutic treatment optimization.

Integral equation analysis of scattering by a spherical microparticle coupled to a subwavelength-diameter wire waveguide.

A rigorous integral equation analysis of the coupling between a fiber waveguide and an adjacent spherical particle is developed. The solution is obtained by applying the entire-domain Galerkin technique, based on Mie-type spherical wave expansion of the field in the sphere and the use of dyadic Green's function of the fiber waveguide. The conversion between cylindrical and spherical wave functions is done through classic analytical formulas. The analysis is applied to numerically investigate transmission through silica wires of subwavelength diameter in the presence of particles of comparable size. The results show the possibility of sensing microparticles through the reduction of transmitted power, which is maximum for certain critical values of the fiber diameter.

Integral equation analysis of coupling in symmetric grating-assisted optical waveguides.

The propagation and coupling phenomena in grating-assisted optical couplers are analyzed by using an integral equation formulation and applying an entire-domain Galerkin technique. The proposed method constitutes a special type of the method of moments and provides high numerical stability and controllable accuracy. The electric field in the grating region is the unknown quantity and the resulting integral equation is subsequently solved by using Galerkin's method. The propagation constants of the guided waves are computed accurately by determining the singular points of the corresponding system's matrix. Numerical results regarding the propagation constants are presented for various coupler parameters, and the effect of the grating's physical and geometric characteristics on the coupling process is investigated.

Transformation of radially traveling cylindrical waves between two skew cylindrical coordinate systems.

The transformation of radially traveling cylindrical waves between two cylindrical coordinate systems with skew (nonparallel) axes is derived for the first time to our knowledge. The analytical procedure is based on the complex integral representation of the Hankel function and appropriate contour deformation and change of variables to obtain a final Fourier transform expression of the cylindrical wave in the new system. Scalar and vector waves are considered. This new result is a powerful tool for the rigorous analysis of scattering and coupling in nonparallel optical fiber configurations.

Rigorous integral equation analysis of nonsymmetric coupled grating slab waveguides.

A rigorous integral equation formulation in conjunction with Green's function theory is used to analyze the waveguiding and coupling phenomena in nonsymmetric (composed of dissimilar slabs) optical couplers with gratings etched on both slabs. The resulting integral equation is solved by applying an entire-domain Galerkin technique based on a Fourier series expansion of the unknown electric field on the grating regions. The proposed analysis actually constitutes a special type of the method of moments and provides high numerical stability and controllable accuracy. The singular points of the system's matrix accurately determine the complex propagation constants of the guided waves. The results obtained improve on those derived by coupled-mode methods in the cases of large grating perturbations and highly dissimilar slabs. Numerical results referring to the evolution of the propagation constants as a function of the grating's characteristics are presented. Optimal grating parameters with respect to minimum coupling length and maximum coupling efficiency are reported. The coupler's efficient operation as an optical bandpass filter is thoroughly investigated.

Analysis of scattering by a linear chain of spherical inclusions in an optical fiber.

The scattering by a linear chain of spherical dielectric inclusions, embedded along the axis of an optical fiber, is analyzed using a rigorous integral equation formulation, based on the dyadic Green's function theory. The coupled electric field integral equations are solved by applying the Galerkin technique with Mie-type expansion of the field inside the spheres in terms of spherical waves. The analysis extends the previously studied case of a single spherical inhomogeneity inside a fiber to the multisphere-scattering case, by utilizing the classic translational addition theorems for spherical waves in order to analytically extract the direct-intersphere-coupling coefficients. Results for the transmitted and reflected power, on incidence of the fundamental HE(11) mode, are presented for several cases.

Investigating the enhancement of three-dimensional diffraction tomography by using multiple illumination planes.

The three dimensional (3-D) extension of the two well-known diffraction tomography algorithms, namely, direct Fourier interpolation (DFI) and filtered backpropagation (FBP), are presented and the problem of the data needed for a full 3-D reconstruction is investigated. These algorithms can be used efficiently to solve the inverse scattering problem for weak scatterers in the frequency domain under the first-order Born and Rytov approximations. Previous attempts of 3-D reconstruction with plane-wave illumination have used data obtained with the incident direction restricted at the xy plane. However, we show that this restriction results in the omission of the contribution of certain spatial frequencies near the omegaz axis for the final reconstruction. The effect of this omission is studied by comparing the results of reconstruction with and without data obtained from other incident directions that fill the spatial frequency domain. We conclude that the use of data obtained for incident direction in only the xy plane is sufficient to achieve a satisfactory quality of reconstruction for a class of objects presenting smooth variation along the z axis, while abrupt variations along the z axis cannot be imaged. This result should be taken into account in the process of designing the acquisition geometry of a tomography scanner.

A four-dimensional simulation model of tumour response to radiotherapy in vivo: parametric validation considering radiosensitivity, genetic profile and fractionation.

The aim of this paper is to present the current state of a four-dimensional simulation model of solid tumour growth and response to radiotherapy developed by our group. The most prominent points of the algorithms describing the fundamental biological phenomena involved are outlined. A specific application of the model to a selected clinical case of glioblastoma multiforme is described and comparative studies are performed, using various exploratory values of the model parameters. Qualitative agreement with clinical observations has been achieved. Special emphasis is laid on the variability of radiosensitivity parameters throughout the cell cycle and on the influence of the genetic profile of the tumour on its radiosensitivity. The results of the simulation are three-dimensionally reconstructed. A valuable tool for getting insight into the biology of tumour growth and response to radiotherapy and at the same time an advanced patient specific decision support system is expected to emerge after the completion of the necessary extensive clinical evaluation.

A spatio-temporal simulation model of the response of solid tumours to radiotherapy in vivo: parametric validation concerning oxygen enhancement ratio and cell cycle duration.

Advanced bio-simulation methods are expected to substantially improve radiotherapy treatment planning. To this end a novel spatio-temporal patient-specific simulation model of the in vivo response of malignant tumours to radiotherapy schemes has been recently developed by our group. This paper discusses recent improvements to the model: an optimized algorithm leading to conformal shrinkage of the tumour as a response to radiotherapy, the introduction of the oxygen enhancement ratio (OER), a realistic initial cell phase distribution and finally an advanced imaging-based algorithm simulating the neovascularization field. A parametric study of the influence of the cell cycle duration Tc, OER, OERbeta for the beta LQ parameter on tumour growth. shrinkage and response to irradiation under two different fractionation schemes has been made. The model has been applied to two glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cases, one with wild type (wt) and another one with mutated (mt) p53 gene. Furthermore, the model has been applied to a hypothetical GBM tumour with alpha and beta values corresponding to those of generic radiosensitive tumours. According to the model predictions, a whole tumour with shorter Tc tends to repopulate faster, as is to be expected. Furthermore, a higher OER value for the dormant cells leads to a more radioresistant whole tumour. A small variation of the OERbeta value does not seem to play a major role in the tumour response. Accelerated fractionation proved to be superior to the standard scheme for the whole range of the OER values considered. Finally, the tumour with mt p53 was shown to be more radioresistant compared to the tumour with wt p53. Although all simulation predictions agree at least qualitatively with the clinical experience and literature, a long-term clinical adaptation and quantitative validation procedure is in progress.

Simulating growth dynamics and radiation response of avascular tumour spheroids-model validation in the case of an EMT6/Ro multicellular spheroid.

The goal of this paper is to provide both the basic scientist and the clinician with an advanced computational tool for performing in silico experiments aiming at supporting the process of biological optimisation of radiation therapy. Improved understanding and description of malignant tumour dynamics is an additional intermediate objective. To this end an advanced three-dimensional (3D) Monte-Carlo simulation model of both the avascular development of multicellular tumour spheroids and their response to radiation therapy is presented. The model is based upon a number of fundamental biological principles such as the transition between the cell cycle phases, the diffusion of oxygen and nutrients and the cell survival probabilities following irradiation. Efficient algorithms describing tumour expansion and shrinkage are proposed and applied. The output of the biosimulation model is introduced into the (3D) visualisation package AVS-Express, which performs the visualisation of both the external surface and the internal structure of the dynamically evolving tumour based on volume or surface rendering techniques. Both the numerical stability and the statistical behaviour of the simulation model have been studied and evaluated for the case of EMT6/Ro spheroids. Predicted histological structure and tumour growth rates have been shown to be in agreement with published experimental data. Furthermore, the underlying structure of the tumour spheroid as well as its response to irradiation satisfactorily agrees with laboratory experience.

Long-term abstinence syndrome in heroin addicts: indices of P300 alterations associated with a short memory task.

Attentional deficits have been implicated in the pathophysiology of opioid addicts. The P300 component of event-related potentials (ERPs) is considered as a manifestation of attentional operations. The authors' goal was the comparison of P300 elicited during a short memory test between subjects with prolonged heroin abstinence and current heroin users as well as healthy controls. The P300 component was evaluated during the anticipatory period of a short memory task in 20 patients characterized by a past history of opioid dependence (6 months abstinence), in 18 current heroin users and in 20 healthy comparison subjects, matched for age, sex and educational level. Abstinent heroin addicts exhibited significant reduction of P300 amplitude at central frontal region, relative to the other two groups. The findings are discussed in connection to the aim of identifying psychophysiological indices, addressing issues in opioid use disorders, and suggest that knowledge about cognitive operations, such as those reflected by P300 component, could provide further insight into psychophysiological mechanisms underlying the long-term abstinence state of heroin addicts.

Analysis of coupling between two slab waveguides in the presence of ring resonators.

The coupling phenomena between two slab waveguides in the presence of ring resonators are investigated through a rigorous integral equation analysis. A Green's-function-theory approach is utilized to develop the integral equation formulation. The solution is obtained by applying an entire-domain Galerkin technique, using the orthogonality properties of involved wave functions in the ring resonators. The field's transmission and reflection coefficients are accurately computed and a practical directional-coupler approach is discussed. The presented results reveal strong resonant coupling phenomena between the two waveguides and the resonators.

The analysis is based on the Green's function concept and the application of the entire-domain Galerkin technique through expansion of the electric field in the resonator in terms of cylindrical wave functions. The algorithm developed yields highly accurate results for the transmission and reflection coefficients in the waveguide. The radiated far field is computed, and the effect of the excitation of a whispering gallery mode on the radiation pattern is studied.

Green's-function method for the analysis of propagation in holey fibers.

A Green's-function method is employed to provide a rigorous analysis to the propagation and coupling phenomena in holey fibers. The analysis is carried out for an arbitrary grid of circular air holes of the fiber guide, while the electromagnetic field is taken to be a vector quantity. Application of the Green's-function concept leads to a coupled system of equations incorporating as unknowns the field expansion coefficients to cylindrical wave functions within the air holes. The propagation constants of the guided waves are computed accurately by determining the singular points of the corresponding system's matrix. Field distribution and dispersion properties of guided modes as well as coupling phenomena between parallel-running holey fibers are investigated, and numerical results are presented.
