Why copper is intrinsically more selective than silver in alkene epoxidation: ethylene oxidation on Cu(111) versus Ag(111).

The heterogeneously catalyzed epoxidation of alkenes is experimentally challenging, theoretically interesting, and technologically important. Although large-scale ethylene epoxidation is universally carried out with Ag catalysts, recent laboratory studies on single crystal surfaces show that Cu is intrinsically much more selective than Ag in the epoxidation of a variety of terminal alkenes. The reasons for this striking difference between Ag and Cu have been investigated by means of density functional theory. It is found that the fundamental cause is the inversion in the ordering of activation barriers for the competing pathways to epoxide formation versus acetaldehyde formation (the latter being the first step on the route to combustion). On Cu, epoxide formation is less activated than aldehyde formation; the opposite is true on Ag. This behavior is associated with a late transition state to epoxidation on Cu (i.e., product-like) compared to an early (reactant-like) transition state to epoxidation on Ag.

On the convergence of isolated neutral oxygen vacancy and divacancy properties in metal oxides using supercell models.

The properties of isolated neutral oxygen vacancies and divacancies of metal oxides of increasing complexity (MgO, CaO, alpha-Al2O3, and ZnO) have been studied by means of density-functional theory within a supercell periodic approach. Vacancy formation energies, vacancy-vacancy interactions, and geometry rearrangements around these point defects have been investigated in detail. The characterization of the electronic structure of these point defects has been established by analysis of the density of states and of the topology of the electron density and of electron localization function. It is found that the chemical character of the oxide determines the properties of the oxygen vacancies. For the covalent ZnO oxide, a more complex scheme arises in which the relaxation around the oxygen vacancy is much larger leading to the formation of Zn4-like almost metallic particles in the crystal. The relationship of these structures with the crystal shear planes is discussed. The present study shows that supercells containing approximately 200-300 atoms provide converged values for the geometric and electronic structure of oxygen vacancies of these metal oxides in the point defect low concentration limit.

When Langmuir is too simple: H2 dissociation on Pd(111) at high coverage.

Recent experiments of H2 adsorption on Pd(111) [Nature (London) 422, 705 (2003)]] have questioned the classical Langmuir picture of second order adsorption kinetics at high surface coverage requiring pairs of empty sites for the dissociative chemisorption. Experiments find that at least three empty sites are needed. Through density functional theory, we find that H2 dissociation is favored on ensembles of sites that involve a Pd atom with no direct interaction with adsorbed hydrogen. Such active sites are formed by aggregation of at least 3 H-free sites revealing the complex structure of the "active sites."

Catalytic CO oxidation by a gold nanoparticle: a density functional study.

Gold is usually considered very noble. It does not oxidize, and the surface of gold cannot adsorb most molecules from the gas phase. Yet it has been found that nanometer size gold particles on different oxide supports can act as catalysts even at or below room temperature. We present self-consistent density functional calculations showing that even an isolated Au10 cluster should be able to catalyze the CO oxidation reaction even below room temperature. We use the calculations to analyze the origin of this effect and suggest that the extraordinary reactivity can be traced back to special reaction geometries available at small particles in combination with an enhanced ability of low coordinated gold atoms to interact with molecules from the surroundings.
