In vitro antibacterial activity of ceftizoxime.

During 1983, the antibacterial activity of ceftizoxime has been tested in vitro against 325 strains of Enterobacteriaceae, Streptococcaceae, Micrococcaceae, Pseudomonaceae and Acinetobacter sp. isolated from material of human origin (blood, urine, faeces, sputum, various exudates). Except for S. faecalis and some strains of P. rettgeri, P. aeruginosa, A. calcoaceticus, Staphylococcus spp. all the strains examined were found to be sensitive to the antibiotic, whose MIC was 0.05-1.5 micrograms/ml in the great majority of cases. For 72 ceftizoxime-sensitive strains the MBC/MIC ratio was nearly always under 4:1, confirming the drug's bactericidal activity. On strains of Enterobacteriaceae (E. coli, K. pneumoniae, S. marcescens, S. typhimurium) MIC of ceftizoxime achieved a minimum bactericidal time (MBT) between 3 and 4 hours of bacteria-antibiotic contact, and bacterial survival percentages were, in any case, very low as early as the 1st hour.

[In vitro activity of josamycin in a comparison of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae].

The antibacterial effect of josamycin has been tested in vitro on strains of S. Aureus, Str. Pyogenes and Str. Pneumoniae isolated during 1981 from human liquor, blood and purulent secretions. It is confirmed that even modest doses of the antibiotic have this effect upon S. Aureus strains which are resistant to several antibiotics including erythromycin and lincomycin. In some cases, although bacteriostasis occurred, bacterial survival indices were fairly modest.

[Multicenter study on the distribution of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains in Italy].

Pneumococcal serotyping by quellung reaction has been performed in five Italian areas on 267 strains, isolated from throat swab, sputum, blood, liquor, etc. 37 serotypes have been identified. The most frequent types resulted 19, 6, 3, 20, 9, 4 (in 50% of total samples), with no difference from those detected in other European countries. The proportion of type 19 was the highest among all age group, in four out of five different areas and in bacteremic pneumonia and meningitis. 36 strains were isolated from infection sites among which type 19 resulted more frequent than in isolates from throat swab and sputum (27.7% versus 16.1%). Pneumococcal serotyping should be routinely done in the light of forthcoming use of polysaccharide vaccine.

[Epidemiology of R plasmid and transferable antibiotic-resistance (author's transl)].

The AA. review the basic characteristics of extra-chromosomal antibiotic-resistance along with research guide-lines concerning the epidemiology of R plasmids. They then report the results of their investigations on isolated Salmonellae during the years 1971-1977. While S. typhimurium and S. wien showed an high incidence of transferable antibiotic-resistance, other Salmonellae belonging to 32 different serotypes had low incidence rates.

A multicentric study for serotyping and susceptibility to antibiotics of pneumococci in Italy.

A multicentric study of the incidence of pneumococcal serotypes was recently carried out in five different geographical areas in Italy. Two hundred and sixty-seven strains were typed using the quellung reaction with monospecific antisera, but only 28 of these were isolated directly from the site of infection. The most frequent serotypes were 19, 6, 3, 9, 4, 1 and 18 without remarkable differences regarding the area, age of patients and site of isolation. It was found that 60.3% of the serotypes isolated from all sources and 67.8% of those isolated from the sites of infection are contained in the currently used antipneumococcal vaccine. Antibiotic resistance was found versus aminoglycosides (34.9%), tetracycline (28.3%), chloramphenicol (5.2%) and penicillin (3.3%). Cefoxitin appeared to be the antibiotic to which the pneumococci were most susceptible. Only two types, 19 and 16, resulted resistant to all the antibiotics.
