[Psychological study of 20 women after failure of in vitro fertilization].

The study is related to 20 women who attempted one or more IVF which failed. A home interview, at least two years later, aimed to know how they had reorganized their life. The hypothesis was that the women who accepted the interview either see it as a reflexion about IVF as an experience belonging to the past, or as an offer to help them because they need it. In fact, regardless of the way the women overcame or not the situation, the number of IVF, and the subsequent presence or absence of children, the overwhelming majority of women (18/20) accepted the interview because they felt the need to help themselves or other women. Considering associated symptoms, interview content and operating psychic mechanisms, IVF physical and psychic costs appear extremely heavy for both women and couples. The experience of IVF seems psychically unintegrable, propositions are made on contra-indications and precautions to take before proposing IVF.

Adaptation, Psychological↗

[New point of view on psychosis. Psychosis, death, and family].

Without denying relevance to previous postulates related to psychosis, the author proposes to view psychosis in the extended context of the immediate family and its generations. After recalling prior literature on overmortality in psychotic patients, on the role of psychic transmission from one generation to the other in the genesis of psychosis, and on the offsprings of families with psychotic members, the author presents the results of her own research: occurrence of psychosis in a family is frequently associated with the death of one or more children among the siblings, and with a tendency towards extinction of the family branch to which the psychotic subject belongs.

Adolescent↗

[Study of mortality under 30 years of age in families of psychotic patients].

After O. Bourguignon's studies (1984), the authors made the following assumption: there is an higher mortality rate before 30 years in families including at least one psychotic. This assumption is confirmed, as far as brothers, sisters and children are concerned, for 101 psychotics compared to 101 control-subjects. This higher death-rate in young subjects is associated in these psychotics' families with greater psychiatric morbidity, with higher rates of celibacy and break-ups of couples. It is the opinion of the authors that these phenomena should be interpreted as portent of a possible extinction of the lineage.

Urethral Syndrome in the female ("irritable bladder"): the expression of fantasies about the urogenital area.

The urethral syndrome is a frequently encountered psychosomatic disorder; it constitutes the main complaint of some 20% of all women who consult a urologist. After a brief survey of the history of this syndrome, the authors examine 55 case reports of women with the urethral syndrome. The authors particularly emphasize the significance of the manner in which patients describe their perceptions of the pain, which is a valuable diagnostic sign. A follow-up study of patients for 3 to 21 years after the first interview demonstrated the releative efficiency of the various forms of treatment. A discussion of the therapeutic possibilities and their limitations follows.
