A study of the menstrual patterns of adolescents in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Questionnaires and interviews with 768 female students in residence at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria revealed that the mean and median ages of menarche were respectively 13.4 +/- 1.4 and 13.5 years and 80.8% had menstrual cycles between 25 and 35 days. The duration of menstrual bleeding was 4.5 +/- 0.8 days; 72.3% had dysmenorrhea and 17.8% complained of nausea and vomiting during menstruation.

Changes in the blood and foetal fluid composition at different stages of gestation in ewes.

In 15 West African Dwarf ewes blood and foetal fluid were collected and investigated on the 50th, 100th, and 150th day of gestation in order to determine normal values. The foetal fluid increased in volume and weight from day 50 to day 150. It was clear, colourless, and slightly viscous by day 50, but creamy, more viscous, and mucoid by days 100 and 150. The number of cellular blood components was dependent on the gestational age. The same was found for electrolytes, cholesterol, total proteins, albumins, and globulin in the blood and amniotic fluids.

Effect of high protein diet on the haematology and plasma biochemistry of puberal West African dwarf rams.

In 10 West African dwarf rams, 5 of which were fed forage only and 5 an additional concentrate (14% protein), several biochemical and morphological blood parameters were determined weekly for 5 weeks. The concentrations of urea, albumin, globulin, cholesterin, alkaline phosphatase, and creatinine as well as the number of white blood cells, neutrophil and eosinophil leucocytes exhibited dependencies on the type of feed.

Plasma biochemical parameters West African dwarf rams and their crosses with Permer.

The West African dwarf (WAD) is the prevailing breed in the South Western part of Nigeria, whereas Permer (P) is a cross of Persian and Merino sheep. Since the mortality rate is unacceptably high in Permer-even under favourable conditions-several plasma variables were determined in 5 WAD and WAD X P rams twice on Mondays over 5 weeks with a view to health prophylactic measures. Differences between the breeds were found that did not, however, in any case agree with the values found by other authors and that suggested a connection with certain diseases. This should be investigated in investigations to come.

Haematology of the crosses of West African dwarf rams with Permer and their castrates.

The haematological status of five West African dwarf (WAD) x Permer (P) rams and five WAD x Permer castrated rams (PC) was determined at 9.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. every Monday for five weeks. The variables measured were: haemoglobin content (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelet (P), white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil (N), lymphocyte (L), monocyte (M), and eosinophil (E) counts. With the exception of N, L, and E, the values were not constant. The values of WBC, N, and L depended on the type of ram used. The time of the blood collection affected the Hb, WBC, and E concentrations. The value of M varied most (depending on the time of blood collection, week of determination, type of ram).
