We present the social and medical history of a Danish war sailor in the merchant navy during the 2nd World War. He was exposed to severe sustained mental stress without a simultaneous physical stress. After about 60 hospital admissions to the hospital he was diagnosed as having a full-blown war sailor syndrome, equivalent to the DSM-III diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.
This study introduces an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for measurement of beta-2-microglobulin in human cerebrospinal fluid. The concentration of beta-2-microglobulin in cerebrospinal fluid correlated with the age (p less than 0.001) of a control group of 40 subjects, probably reflecting age-related processes in the central nervous system. The reference interval of beta-2-microglobulin was considered to be 0.62-3.28 mg/1. Results obtained with various CNS disorders demonstrated that estimation of beta-2-microglobulin in cerebrospinal fluid add diagnostic information. The concentration of beta-2-microglobulin may increase without simultaneous aberrations in the content of protein, glucose and white blood cells.
Intravenous digital subtraction angiography provides an accurate but not specific method for localization of small vascular tumours. It is carried out on outpatients as an intravenous procedure and takes only 40 minutes. It appears to be eminently suited to the demonstration of parathyroid adenomas and shows that a hyperplastic parathyroid gland can produce a significant enough vascular blush to create a visible image.
A case of progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy in a 43-year-old man with Hodgkin's disease is presented. 17 similar cases from the literature are reviewed. Clinical implications of sex-ratio, age-distribution, diagnostic procedures and clinical course are discussed. Special attention is paid to the distribution of cases correlated to the lapse of time between diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease and symptoms of progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy, indicating progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy to be either a dormant infection, activated by Hodgkin's disease, or a haphazard complication. Both possibilities could be due to an impaired cell-mediated immune response.

Three hundred and sixty consecutive patients with thyroid swellings were investigated and operated on at Ga-Rankuwa Hospital, Pretoria. Patients were referred from 34 homeland hospitals and from Caprivi, making this series a reasonable reflection of thyroid disease in Blacks. A noteworthy increase in the incidence of malignant thyroid tumours becomes evident when the series is compared with those in previously relevant publications. A more radical surgical approach is defended in the light of current neoconservatism.
