Photonic band gap via quantum coherence in vortex lattices of Bose-Einstein condensates.

We investigate the optical response of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex lattice. We find that it is possible for the vortex lattice to act as a photonic crystal and create photonic band gaps, by enhancing the refractive index of the condensate via a quantum coherent scheme. If high enough index contrast between the vortex core and the atomic sample is achieved, a photonic band gap arises depending on the healing length and the lattice spacing. A wide range of experimentally accessible parameters are examined and band gaps in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are found. We also show how directional band gaps can be used to directly measure the rotation frequency of the condensate.

Indistinguishable photons from a single molecule.

We report the results of coincidence counting experiments at the output, of a Michelson interferometer using the zero-phonon-line emission of a single molecule at 1.4 K. Under continuous wave excitation, we observe the absence of coincidence counts as an indication of two-photon interference. This corresponds to the observation of Hong-Ou-Mandel correlations and proves the suitability of the zero-phonon-line emission of single molecules for applications in linear optics quantum computation.

Quantum phase diffusions of a spinor condensate.

We discuss the quantum phases and their diffusion in a spinor-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. For ferromagnetic interactions, we obtain the exact ground state distribution of the phase fluctuations corresponding to the total atom number (N), the magnetization (M), and the alignment (or hypercharge) (Y) of the system. The mean-field ground state is shown to be stable against these fluctuations, which dynamically recover the two continuous symmetries associated with the conservation of N and M as in current experiments.
