[Osteogenic sarcoma in children: clinico-immunological correlations].

Initial immunologic status in children suffering osteogenic sarcoma was retrospectively evaluated versus such parameters as site and extent of tumor, and clinical course. A complex of disorders in the immunologic system was established in osteogenic sarcoma patients. Such characteristics as levels of active, theophylline--sensitive and levamisole--reactivated T-cells were found clinically valuable and prognostically significant. These parameters may betray response of high- and low-affinity E-receptors of lymphocytes to serum factors of tumor growth.

[Effect of the antineoplastic antibiotic bruneomycin on lymphocyte population ratio in mice].

Data on the quantitative ratio of the populations of T- and B-cells in the lymphoid organs of mice at various periods after oral administration of bruneomycin are presented. It was shown that in contrast to the total number of T- and B-cells in the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes amounting to the minimal values at the early periods (days 1-3) after the antibiotic injection, their relative content remained rather high. Complete recovery of the number of T- and B-lymphocytes in the above organs was observed only by the end of a month period. Study on the kinetics of the immune response to sheep red blood cells showed that reactivity of the antibody producers in the experiments with bruneomycin increased 1.5-2 fold as compared to the control.

[The immunomodulating action of combined therapy together with local UHF hyperthermia in osteogenic sarcoma in children].

The paper is concerned with immunological evaluation of different stages of combined therapy with local UHF hyperthermia in children with osteogenic sarcoma. Combined therapy (polychemo- and radiotherapy) was shown to cause a decrease in the number of immunocompetent cells, to enhance imbalance of immunoregulatory T-lymphocytes, to weaken T-lymphocyte function on PHA; immunosuppressive action of combined therapy did not depend on a tumor site. The incorporation of UHF-hyperthermia in the therapeutic scheme weakened the manifestations of secondary immunodeficiency, got back to normal the structure of T-lymphocyte population. A favorable immunomodulating effect of hyperthermia was more frequently observed in patients with crural bone tumors. The effect of hyperthermia was revealed after direct influence of thermotherapy but it was absent in continuation of combined treatment.

[Effect of bruneomycin on the immune response induced in mice by various antigens].

The effect of the antitumor antibiotic bruneomycin on antibody formation in response to immunization with sheep red blood cells and E. coli lipopolysaccharide was studied on mice. Marked suppression of the primary immune response following parenteral injection of the antibiotic before antigen stimulation and activation of antibody genesis due to oral administration of the drug in doses of 1 to 2 mg/kg was observed. An increase in the absolute and relative numbers of the antibody forming cells (AFC) in the spleen after the antibiotic oral administration in spite of a lowered total number of lymphocytes in it suggested that the AFC precursors (B-lymphocytes) were resistant to bruneomycin.

[Metastasis of Lewis carcinoma during local UHF hyperthermia].

The paper is concerned with the results of a study of the relation of a metastatic spreading of mouse Lewis carcinoma to temperature distribution in the area of a tumor and healthy tissue damage. It was shown that a significant metastatic spreading inhibition was observed in selective MWF-hyperthermia (43-46 degrees C, 30 min). In the absence of a selective hyperthermal exposure when both tumors and healthy tissues were damaged (at the same thermal dose), there was a tendency to metastatic spreading enhancement. A considerable metastatic growth was noted after tumor-affected limb amputation without hyperthermal exposure.

[Immunosuppressive properties of olivomycin].

The effect of olivomycin on the cell and humoral immune response was studied on mice. It was shown that antibody genesis stimulated by sheep red blood cells or E. coli lipopolysaccharide was almost equally inhibited by olivomycin when administered 24 hours before administration of the antigen. The magnitude of the delayed type hypersensitivity induced by the antigen low doses (10(5) cells) did not change when the antibiotic was administered in a dose of 1.5 mg/kg. When the antibiotic dose was 3 mg/kg, it decreased 2 times as compared to the control. On immunization of the mice with sheep red blood cells in a dose of 10(9) cells olivomycin administered in the doses inhibiting the antibody genesis induced an increase in the delayed type hypersensitivity. Such an effect of the antibiotic has much in common with the effect of other cytostatics.

[Characteristics of 57Co-bleomycetin accumulation in the primary tumor and in its metastases to the lungs in mice with Lewis carcinoma].

Distribution of 57Co-bleomycin was studied in mice with Lewis carcinoma implanted into different parts of the body. It was found that organ distribution of the labeled antibiotic did not depend on the tumor localization. The accumulation level of 57Co-bleomycin in Lewis carcinoma implanted subcutaneously into the pad foot was 3 times higher than that in the healthy pad. Resection of the primary tumor stimulated metastasis to the lungs resulting in relatively selective accumulation of the antibiotic in the lungs. The levels of 57Co-bleomycin in the lungs the main part of which was affected with metastases were 3--7 times higher than the respective control values.

[Effect of rubomycin and carminomycin on suppressor cells participating in the regulation of the immune response].

The effect of rubomycin and carminomycin on induction of suppressor cells in immunization of mice with high doses (2 . 10(9) cells) of sheep red blood cells (SRBC) or with the allogeneic spleen cells was studied. When the spleen cells of syngeneic animals hyperimmunized with SRBC were administered to intact cells, a marked specific suppression of both the antibody formation and the reaction of the delayed type hypersensitivity were observed. A decrease in the suppressor activity or its complete elimination as a result of exposure of the spleen cell donors to the antibiotics was indicative of a relatively selective effect of these drugs on the suppressor cells. This effect of the antibiotics increased after treatment of the spleen immune cells with the anti-T-serum and complement. However, the blocking effect of the antibiotics on the suppressor cells was not strictly specific, since they were detected in the syngeneic and allogenic systems with the cell transfer.

[The immunomodulating action of bestatin in the combined therapy of bladder cancer patients].

A beneficial effect of bestatin used as adjuvant in the course of chemo- and radiotherapy of local cancer of the bladder manifested itself as a reduction of postradiation immunosuppression: increased count of T mu-helper/inductors and T gamma-suppressors/killers, enhancement of neutrophil phagocytic activity. Bestatin recovers radiation-impaired immune system by inhibition of T gamma-suppressor killers and their precursors generation, of endogenic regulators suppressive activity, normalization of T-lymphocyte and natural killer activity, stimulation of B-lymphocyte recovery.

[The intravesical administration of BCG vaccine in treating recurrent superficial bladder cancer].

The authors consider general immunological effects of intravesical BCG vaccine as an independent method of immunotherapy of superficial cancer of the bladder (CB). 27 patients (15 males and 12 females, mean age 57 years) with a recurrence of superficial CB (T1-2N0M0) were treated. The patients had undergone transurethral or transvesical bladder resection and combined therapy. Intravesical immunotherapy of CB recurrence with BCG vaccine induced persistent changes in the immune system: stimulate lymphocyte activity and phagocytic activity of neutrophils, T-cell function, normalizes function of endogenic suppressors, increases the amount of IgM and CIC. Repeat courses of the vaccine maintain the above immunological effects for a long time.
