[The experience of using sterilized milk enriched with beta-carotene in the diet of preschool age children in Kursk].

The results of sterilized milk enriched with beta-carotene usage for nutrition of children under school age in Kursk town is presented. 140 weakened children at the age of 1.5-7 years old attending the children dispensary were tested within the period of 3 years. It was stated that under the influence of beta-carotene in the children allowance acute and chronic diseases including diseases of breathe organs, blood system and the level of respiratory diseases have been reduced. The wide usage of dairy products enriched with beta-carotene in medical-prophylactic nutrition of children under school age is recommended.

[A risk of metastasis of choroid melanoma after brachytherapy].

The efficiency of treatment, frequency rate and the time of onset of metastasis were analyzed in 271 patients with uveal melanomas. The follow-up ranged from 4 to 16 years. 193 patients were observed more than 5 years and 77 patients were observed more than 7 years. Modest and medium tumors were registered in 185 patients. A complete resorption of tumors was observed in 167 cases, 78 eye were enucleated due to an insufficient therapeutic effect. Metastases were diagnosed in 9.6% of patients. As for the group of patients observed for more than 5 years, metastases were observed among them in 6% of cases. Metastases set on in 4-5 years after operations in 38% of cases, metastases developed postoperatively in 5 to 10 years in 50% of patients. A total regression of tumor is not a guarantee to a complete recovery, however, the frequency rate of metastases drops to 7% and they appear during a more remote time period (on the average 7.7 years later). At the same time, when the therapeutic effect after brachytherapy is insufficient, the frequency rate of metastases went up virtually to 18%, while the time of their onset reduced to 4 years.

[Morphofunctional characteristics of the retina and optic nerve in endocrine ophthalmopathy].

Optic neuropathy is a serious complication of endocrine ophthalmopathy (EOP). The morphological characteristics of the optic nerve (provided by a Heidelberg, HRT II retinotomograph) were compared with the functional impairments of various canals of light, color, and contrast sensitivities (detected by an Offon programme complex, MBN, Moscow). There were decreases in contrast and color sensitivities just at the early stages of the disease and deteriorated functions of contract and color sensitivity canals as optic neuropathy progressed. The HRT II retinotomograph has shown a significant change in the thickness of optic nerve fibers, the area of the optic disk (OD), and the volume of the neuroretinal ring, which corresponds to the magnitude of clinical manifestations and the severity of OD lesion. The first retinal changes appear long before optic nerve compression at the orbital apex (orbital apex syndrome), which are caused by ischemic and hypoxic processes due to orbital soft tissue edema. The most sensitive test in detecting the latent stage of optic neuropathy in EOP is a color and contrast sensitivity topography test. In EOP, the morphological optic nerve changes correlate with functional impairments in different canals of the visual system, reflecting the stage of the disease.

[Results of the treatment of retinoblastoma].

The treatment efficacy is analyzed in 262 patients (335 eyes). Besides traditional enucleation, organ-sparing methods were used in combination with polychemotherapy with or without external irradiation. The authors emphasize the advisability of polychemotherapy supplementing the therapeutic complex in retinoblastoma.

[Bilateral retinoblastoma].

On the basis of analysis of the latest literature data and their own findings the authors demonstrate an increasing incidence of bilateral retinoblastomas. Clinical features of the condition are described and potentialities of its treatment discussed.
