Allergic contact dermatitis from falcarinol isolated from Schefflera arboricola.

From the plant Schefflera arboricola, which has been reported to cause allergic contact dermatitis, we have isolated and determined the elicitor of allergic contact dermatitis as falcarinol, heptadeca-1,9(Z)-diene-4,6-diyne-3-ol. Three polyacetylenes closely related to falcarinol, namely falcarindiol, falcarinone and dehydrofalcarinone were tested simultaneously. Falcarinol, but not falcarindiol, falcarinone and dehydrofalcarinone, elicited allergic contact dermatitis in a 38-year-old female plant-nursery worker.

A retrospective study of cataract formation in 96 patients treated with PUVA.

Studies in guinea pigs have shown formation of cataract when they are treated with 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) and UVA irradiation. 96 patients treated with PUVA between 1975 and 1980 were examined to observe if cataract formation had occurred more frequently in these patients. No patient developed cataract during the PUVA treatment period and these findings were found to correspond to those in a "standard population".

Allergic contact dermatitis from Philodendron scandens KOCH et SELLO subsp. oxycardium (SCHOTT) BUNTING ("Philodendron scandens cordatum").

Allergic contact dermatitis due to Philodendron scandens KOCH et SELLO subsp. oxycardium (SCHOTT) BUNTING ("Philodendron scandens cordatum") is seldom reported. In four patients with dermatitis, allergy to philodendron species was found through patch testing with leaves, stems and ether extracts from eight philodendron species. Although this allergy appears to be rare, it ought to be considered in patients with dermatitis on hands, arms and face.

Standard patch test results in 3,225 consecutive Danish patient from 1973 to 1977.

From 1973 to 1977 a total of 3,225 patients were patch tested at the Department of Dermatology, Odense University Hospital, Denmark; 1,038 patients reacted to one or more allergens. The data on frequency of the most common allergens are presented. The most common allergens observed were nickel, dichromate, balsam of Peru, wood tar, carba mix and wool alcohols.

[Monstrous atypical basaloma].

Report of a 85 year old woman with monstrous basal cell carcinoma of 20 years duration. No metastases or osseous destruction were found. Following X-ray therapy the tumor completely disappeared.
