[Biochemical and ultrastructural changes in the brain of the rat exposed to the cerebrospinal fluid of schizophrenics].

Using biochemical and ultrastructural methods of examination, the authors studied the brain of rats following the intracysternal injection of spinal fluid from schizophrenic patients. The elicited disorders of the ultrastructure of neurons of the medulla oblongata as well as alterations in the content of lipid peroxidation products, gangliosides and cerebrosides were directly correlated with disorders identified in the brain of schizophrenic patients. It was concluded on the basis of the results obtained that marked neurotoxic properties of schizophrenics' cerebral fluid appeared to be explained by the presence of antibodies to brain antigens.

[Antioxidant capacity of the blood serum of schizophrenic patients in relation to brain tissue as an index of its neurotropic activity].

The authors have proposed a method of determining the neurotropic activity of the blood serum, which is based on the ability of cytotoxic anticerebral antibodies to intensify the processes of lipid peroxidation in the homogenate of the rat brain. Sera of the overwhelming majority of the 175 schizophrenics studied showed neurotropic activity. At the stage of exacerbation patients with different forms of schizophrenia showed identical neurotropic activity while at the stage of remission this activity was significantly different as compared with both the value characteristic of the exacerbation stage and the control one.

[Ultrastructural and biochemical evidence of brain damage by the serum IgG fraction of the blood of schizophrenics].

Using electron microscopic and biochemical studies, the rat brain was examined following the intracisternal administration of IgG obtained from schizophrenics' blood serum. The resultant ultrastructural impairments of the sensorimotor cortex and activation of lipid peroxidation processes were similar to the alterations detected in the brain of the schizophrenic patients. The results suggest that the circulating cerebral antibodies in schizophrenics possess a membranotropic effect and may induce various structural and functional disorders in the central nervous system of these patients.

[Detection of the neurotropic properties of the serum of schizophrenia patients].

A method of testing neurotropic properties of the serum of schizophrenic patients is proposed. This method was tested on 27 schizophrenic patients and based on experimental data. In all cases there was a narrowing of the width of the glomerular zone in the adrenal glands of rats administered the serum of schizophrenic patients intravenously. There was a significant difference in the width of the zone depending upon the stage of the disease and exacerbation, while in experiments, depending upon the presence of antibodies to brain subcommissural organs.

Adrenal Cortex↗

[Kinin system components and immune complexes in schizophrenia].

The sera of schizophrenic patients showed existence of immune complexes and an increased activity of kallikrein, as well as relationship between these indices and the phase of the process. Their totality may be recommended for evaluating the activity of the process and efficacy of the treatment.

Antigen-Antibody Complex↗

[Biochemical and ultrastructural changes in animal brain after intracisternal administration of the cerebrospinal fluid from patients with schizophrenia].

After intracisternal administration of liquor from patients with schizophrenia into rabbits and rats content of catecholamines, gangliosides and cerebrosides was decreased, while acid proteinase was activated in brain tissue. At the same time, ultrastructural impairments occurred in nervous cells. These data suggest that cytotoxic antibrain antibodies are present in liquor of schizophrenic patients.
