[Coloring cells of the cornea of trout].

Cells from the eye cornea of Hexagrammos octagrammus which are responsible for changes of the cornea colour from bright orange to colourless, depending on the light conditions, are described. It was shown that the change in cornea colour was due to a shift of red pigment from the cell body into its processes (in the light) and in the opposite direction at the dark adaptation of animals. The ultrastructural constitution of these cells has a number of characteristics. The whole cell cytoplasm is filled up with fine lipid droplets wherein carotenoid pigments giving red colour to these cells are presumably dissolved; the cytoplasmic membrane forms numerous deep and branched folds into the cell and has a lot of pinocytose visicles; the cell body and especially the process display many microtubes arranged regularly. The described cells differ greatly in their form, size and ultrastructural constitution from the known types of pigment cells (melanophores, xanthophores and erythrophores). This makes it possible to consider them as chromatophores of an independent type.

[Physiologic mechanisms of the constancy of color perception].

The color constancy is the ability to recognize correctly the colours of the objects under different illuminations. For this purpose the visual system must identify the character of illumination and estimate the colour of the object, using the light reflected from this object according to the spectrum of illumination. The behavioral experiments with fishes showed that they possess the colour constancy. The electrophysiological studies on colour-coding ganglion cells showed that the simplest mechanisms of estimating the colours of objects according to illumination exist at the retinal level. The presence of colour vision facilitates the recognition of the volume form of the objects. The generally accepted view on the place and role of colour vision in the general function of the visual system of animals has to be changed on the basis of these facts.

[Contancy of color perception in the grey toad].

Under the conditions of behavioural experiment capacity of grey toads for constant perception of an object colour was studied. It is shown that irrespective of the spectral composition of light source toad males are able to recomgnize blue colorations among the other ones (green and grey of various gradations).

[Constancy of color perception in the gray toad (Bufo bufo L.)].

Colour vision and constancy of colour perception in Bufo bufo L, were examined by means of unconditioned reaction of choosing moving and stationary models of females by males during breeding season. The males chose blue and dark blue models. Control of the choice of blue models presented in pairs with models of different shades of grey proves the existence of colour vision in Bufo bufo L. The choice of blue models has been observed under significantly varying conditions: both with artificial illumination and in sunlight. This attests the capacity of toads for constant colour perception. When a model was presented against a saturated red background, colour contrast was observed: under such conditions the toads chose the grey models which evoked no reactions when presented against white background.
