Distribution of haematological, serum and urine values in a general population of middle-aged men. The Reykjavik Study.

In the first stage of a prospective cardiovascular health survey, 2955 males aged 34-61 years were invited for examination during a 12-month period. The response was 75%. Appointments were arranged in such a way that all age groups would be equivalent with respect to time of day, weekday and time of year on which appointments were given. In fasting blood and urine samples the following quantities were estimated: s-alkaline phosphatase (AP), s-bilirubin (Bil), s-creatinine (Cre), s-uric acid (UA), haemoglobin (Hb), haematocrit (Hct), mean cell haemoglobin content (MCHC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and urine specific gravity (USG). The approximate 5% and 95% centiles were as follows: (table; see text) No indication of seasonal variation was found in these results.

Comparative evaluation of 99mTc-pertechnetate, 99mTc-diphosphonate, 99mTc-Solcocitran, 99mTc-iron-ascorbic acid and 67Ga-citrate as brain scanning agents.

The uptake of 99mTc-pertechnetate (TcO4), 99mTc-iron-ascorbic acid (Feasc), 99mTc-Solcocitran (Solcocitran), 99mTc-diphosphonate (HEDP) and 67Ga-citrate (Ga) in various brain lesions was compared. Influence of time from injection was also studied on the first three compounds. A rank correlation method was used to compare the scans which were judged visually by three independent observers. There was good agreement between the observers, as measured by Kendall's tau, but the concordance between rankings within the same type of lesion, as measured by Kendall's W, was rather poor. There was no significant difference in the uptake of TcO4, Feasc and Solcocitran. Ga showed generally poor uptake and its uptake in tumours and infarcts did not differ significantly. However, when HEDP and TcO4 were compared in two groups (I: Infarcts, haemorrhages and bone invading meningiomas, and II: Tumours not invaded into bone) a highly significant difference was obtained with much higher uptake of HEDP in Group I.

Survey of serum lipid levels in Icelandic men aged 34-61 years. An epidemiological and statistical evaluation.

This report presents the results of serum beta-lipoprotein, total cholesterol and triglycerides determinations in a male population surveyed 1967--'68. This was the first stage (stage I) in a prospective health survey conducted by the Icelandic Health Association. The area of study was the city of Reykjavík with adjacent suburbs and communes. The population invited was 1/3 of each of 16 year-groups of males in the age-interval 34-61 years. The population was selected from the National Roster according to birthdays i.e. the 1st, 4th, 7th,.. of each month, the total number being 2.955. The response was 75.1%. B-lipoproteins were determined with the Hyland Beta-L Test, total cholesterol and triglycerides on Technicon AutoAnalyzer (i) according to Technicon Methodology N-24a, and a modification of the method of Kessler and Lederer respectively. Control sera were run in connection with cholesterol- and triglycerides determinations. Serum cholesterol levels were similar to the highest reported from other countries contrary to the triglycerides levels which are in the low range. The mean values and lower centiles are practically independent of age whereas the higher centiles are markedly age-dependent. A seasonal variation for the cholesterol weekly mean values was found. These values were highest in winter and lowest in summer, the difference estimated to be 30-40 mg%. No seasonal variation of triglycerides was found. Centile-flowdiagrams for these blood lipids are presented and the use of similar flowdiagrams is suggested as an aid to bridge a gap between the interpretation of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.

A population study of rheumatoid factor in Iceland. A 5-year follow-up of 50 women with rheumatoid factor (RF).

The subject of this paper is a 5-year follow-up of 50 women found with Rose-Waaler Titre greater than or equal 1 : 10 or with a Acryl Fixation Titre greater than or equal 1 : 10 in a general health survey conducted in the Reykjavik area in 1968-1969. The average annual incidence of RA was 2.3 percent. Of four women who died during the follow-up period, three were amongst those with the highest titres. Two of the decreased had cancer mammae and one had lung cancer. Changes in RF-titres and New York Criteria are also discussed. It is suggested that RF-positives could be divided in three different riskgroups.
