Acute appendicitis secondary to non-0 group I Vibrio cholerae.

Acute appendicitis is the most common abdominal surgical condition and is usually associated with colonic flora. The patient described had acute appendicitis associated with an uncommon microorganism. This report underscores the importance of obtaining an adequate occupational, travel, and dietary history.

Primary skeletal lymphoma imaging and pathologic correlation.

Primary skeletal lymphoma is an uncommon tumor whose appearance on plain-film radiographs has been well described. However, few reports have described the appearance of this neoplasm on magnetic resonance imaging. As in the primary skeletal lymphoma described, magnetic resonance imaging can be used to define the extent of the tumor and the degree of soft tissue and bone marrow involvement. It can also help to determine the biopsy site and to monitor the tumor's response to radiation therapy.

Quantitative evaluation of bile diversion surgery utilizing 99mTc HIDA scintigraphy.

This is a report of 21 patients presenting with epigastric pain, bilious vomiting, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, iron-deficiency anemia, and weight loss, who had undergone Billroth II gastrectomy from 3 to 35 yr earlier. Eighteen of 21 patients were found to have significant enterogastric reflux indices varying from 60% to 95% demonstrated by 99mTc HIDA scintigraphy. Thirteen patients had diversion antireflux surgery in the form of a Roux-en-Y procedure, and 1 patient had a Henley loop jejunal interposition. Postoperative 99mTc HIDA scintigraphic studies showed the enterogastric reflux indices to have decreased significantly to a range of 2%-26% (p less than 0.00001). There was marked improvement of symptoms, including correction of anemia and weight gain in those patients who had been anemic or who had sustained earlier weight loss. The enterogastric reflux indices of 10 asymptomatic control patients after Billroth II gastrectomy ranged from 4% to 45%. 99mTc HIDA scintigraphy is useful in evaluating patients before and after bile diversion surgery, and demonstrates the quantitative decrease in enterogastric reflux after such surgery.

The role of 99mTc-bound phosphates and grey scale echography in the differentiation of pelvic tumors.

99mTc-pyrophosphate and 99mTc-diphosphonate have successfully been employed in the diagnosis of neoplastic pelvic disease in women. In our ongoing study, 48 women with pelvic masses, underwent dynamic pelvic scintigraphy, correlative ultrasonography and exploratory laparotomy. Dynamic scintigraphy and region of interest time/activity curves generated from computerized data acquisition have proven effective in the differential diagnosis of uterine leiomyomas from ovarian cysts. In a group of 24 women whose scintigraphic data were consistent with our criteria for uterine leiomyoma, 21 were confirmed histologically. Of 30 women, 29 were accurately diagnosed on scintigraphy as having an ovarian cyst and two patients with coexisting ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids were both correctly diagnosed prior to surgery. Detected lesions ranged from 6--22 cm in diameter. Our findings support the use of dynamic pelvic scintigraphy for differentiating uterine leiomyomas from ovarian cysts.

67Ga scintigraphy in lymphomas with special reference to cardiac apical mass.

The cardiac apical mass of Hodgkin's disease, an infrequent presentation of lymphomas, can be selectively labeled with 67Ga-citrate. Three cases are presented illustrating the value of 67Ga scintigraphy in the differential diagnosis of pericardial masses, as well as its role in the management and assessment of therapy.

Gray scale echography of unilateral renal disease.

Gray scale ultrasound is a reliable noninvasive method of demonstrating renal pathology. It is simple nontraumatic, nonionizing and can be readily utilized in the differentiation of cystic and solid lesions.
