[Fascioliasis--a contribution to the differential diagnosis of focal liver processes].

The case of a 60 years old patient with a rare parasitosis, fascioliasis hepatica, is presented. The clinical, parasitologic, radiologic and histologic findings are discussed with reference to the literature. The diagnosis was established by examination of the faeces of the patient. The radiologic examinations document the extent of the organic involvement, in the presented case that of the liver. The finding of circumscribed hypodense liver lesions can be decisive for the further diagnostic proceedings only in the light of an appropriate history and typical laboratory findings.

A proteoglycan with affinity for the vegetalizing factor: characterization by density gradient centrifugation.

A crude proteoglycan fraction isolated from chicken embryos has an affinity for the vegetalizing factor, which induces mesodermal and endodermal tissues in gastrula ectoderm of Triturus alpestris. Binding of the factor to the crude proteoglycan results in inactivation of the vegetalizing factor. The crude proteoglycan was centrifuged in CsCl and CsCl-urea density gradients. Most of the inactivating material was recovered from the gradients in the high density proteoglycan fraction. Part of the inactivating material was found in glycoproteins of lower density. It is concluded that not all of the polysaccharide moiety of the proteoglycan is involved in binding of the vegetalizing factor. The proteoglycan is inactivated by incubation with hyaluronidase.

Stimulation of collagen synthesis in a cell-free system by mRNA from chick embryos.

Embryonic chick RNA was translated in a cell-free system derived from wheat germ. One of the products synthesized in vitro under the direction of this RNA could be identified as collagen on the basis of collagenase digestion experiments and sodium dodecylsulfate-acrylamide gel electrophoresis. By submitting the RNA to chromatography on oligo(dT)-cellulose, a 26-30-fold enrichment of the mRNA coding for collagen was achieved.
