Treatment of visceral Leishmaniasis unresponsive to pentamidine with amphotericin B.

Twenty five cases of visceral leishmaniasis unresponsive to Pentamidine were treated with Amphotericin B in the dose schedule of 0.75 mg per kg body weight I.V. on alternate days for total 15 infusions. Full cure was achieved in all twenty five (hundred per cent) cases, no significant toxicity was observed during as well as after treatment and none of the patients relapsed during twelve months follow-up.

Experience with amphotericin B in sodium stibogluconate--unresponsive cases of visceral Leishmaniasis in north Bihar.

One hundred cases of Indian Kala-azar unresponsive to sodium stibogluconate (SSG) were treated with amphotericin B. The drug was given in the dose schedule of 0.75 mg/kg body weight on alternate days intravenously dissolved in 5 percent dextrose solution. After 15 infusions given over a period of 30 days, all cases became clinically and parasitologically cured. Mild adverse reactions were noted during therapy. No relapse was observed at follow up after 12 months.

Study of cerebrospinal fluid in Salmonella typhi meningitis.

The present study was designed to study the cerebrospinal fluid of Salmonella typhi meningitis cases. All the 12 cases (100%) showed increase in the lymphocyte count (range 6-24 cells/cmm, mean 15.40 cells/cmm) and increase in protein concentration (range 80-125 mg.Dl, mean 86.25 mg/dl), while glucose concentration remained normal (range 56-80 mg/dl, mean 64.25 mg/dl). These changes in CSF may resemble viral meningitis, from which Salmonella typhi meningitis can only be differentiated by culture of CSF.

Amphotericin B therapy in kala-azar.

Twenty-seven adult patients of kala-azar unresponsive to sodium stibogluconate (SSG) were given amphotericin B in the dose schedule of 0.50 mg/kg body weight on alternate days for a total of 21 to 31 infusions, depending upon clinical and parasitological response. A 100% cure rate was achieved at the end of the therapy and no relapse was encountered during 12 months follow-up. Only mild adverse reactions were noted on the day of infusion during therapy. Amphotericin B was found to be an acceptable alternative drug for treatment of such cases.
